The object of this paper is to look into the transition of discourse about Asia in 'The Nippon' one of the most famous newspapers in the period from 1888-1894, in the Meiji era. The president and chief editor of 'The Nippon' was KUGA Katsunan who was known as a nationalist. 'The Nippon' was a strong opponent of the treaty revion plan and Westernization by the government, which led the newspaper to posifively estimsating Asian countries and its civilization. But when the Sino- Japanese War broke out, the viewpoint of 'The Nippon' about Asia changed and its standpoint approached that of the Government.
