Weekly Homework WEEK 13 M. すきですか それとも (or) きらいですか - Please answer in 日本ご expressing the degree of likeness/dislikeness. Cf) こわいテレビがすきですか いいえ だいきらいです or きらいです [Answers will vary.] 1. やさしいテストがきらいですか 2. さむい日がすきですか 3. あついのみものがすきですか 4. きたないうみがだいきらいですか 5. しずかなまちがすきですか 6. にぎやかなともだちがだいすきですか 7. やすいりょこうがすきですか T. Let s Do Something!! ~ ましょう / ましょうか is the Japanese equivalent of Let s ~! Please note that we don t have a simple way to express, let s NOT~, in Japanese. While ~ ましょう simply suggests an activity, ~ ましょうか seeks for the listener s confirmation to the suggested activity, similar to the usage of the ね -particle. Please translate the following conversation into にほんご A: This homework is difficult, isn t it? Let s ask the teacher, shall we? このしゅくだいはむずかしいですね せんせいにききましょうか B: But, the teacher is busy, now. でも せんせいはいまいそがしいです A: Then, let s ask the Japanese friend! じょあ 日本じんのともだちにききましょう 1

G: Today is very cold, isn t it? Let s drink a (cup of) hot coffee, shall we? 今日はとてもさむいですね あついコーヒーを飲みませんか H: But, I despise coffee. How about a (cup of) hot cocoa? でも 私はコーヒーがだいきらいです あついココアはどうですか G: Sure, that s fine. Then, there is a new café near the bus station. Let s go over there!! ええ いいですよ じゃあ バスていのそばにあたらしいきっさてんがあります そこへいきましょう 2

W. Leafy Objects きって / きっぷをかいましょう! Since all Japanese nouns are mass nouns (uncountable nouns), virtually all nouns must use a counter to express number. These counters are not independent words and always appear with a number before them. Here we learn how to count all leafy objects such as papers, tickets, stamps etc Please ask the following. きってをください is modified to ask for a specific number of tickets. Since that information is important, we place it closer to the verb. きってを 3まいください Please note no particle is needed for the counters. 1. Could I have 2 stamps? きってを 2 まいください Or きってを 2 まいおねがいします 2. Could I have 4 tickets for Godzilla? (use N 1 の N 2 construction for tickets for Godzilla) ゴジラのきっぷを 4 まいください 3. How much are 2 stamps? (introduce Stamp as a topic) きっては 2 まいいくらですか 4. How much are 2 tickets to Tokyo? とうきょうまでのきっぷは 2 まいいくらですか 5. Could I have 6 tickets to Kyoto? きょうとまでのきっぷを 6 まいください / おねがいします R. パーティーで日本ごをはなしましょう! As an exchange student in Japan, you went to a dinner party and saw Akemi-san whom you wanted to meet for a while. It s your golden opportunity. Please translate the following sentences written in italic into 日本ご. Some hints are given in [ ]. 1. Hello, it was a very nice weather today, wasn t it? Did you go out? こんばんは 今日はとてもいい天気でしたね でかけましたか 2. (You found out that Akemi-san spent all day studying for the chemistry test, which she d just finished right before the party.) Was the test difficult? I, too, studied in the morning. But in the afternoon (pm) I saw a scary movie with a friend. [Introduce morning and afternoon as a topic] テストはむずかしかったですか 私もあさはべんきょうしました でも ごごはともだちとこわいえいがを見ました 3. (You want to end the conversation with a high note, so.) I like chemistry a lot. Why don t we study together? 私はかがくがだいすきです いっしょにべんきょうしませんか 3

Weekly Homework WEEK 13 M. かんじをかきましょう! Please refer to the Kanji list on pages 312-313 if necessary. 日本ごかんじいみ (meaning in English) せんせい先生 teacher だいがく大学 university がくせい学生 student がいこく外国 foreign country てんごく天国 heaven ちゅうごく中国 China がいこくじん外国人 foreigner T. Te-Form We are learning a new verb conjugation called Te-form, which allows us to express; 1. making requests: ~, please 2. giving and asking for permission: You may ~ / May I ~? 3. stating that something is forbidden: You must not ~. 4. describing two events or activities in a sentence: I did this and did that. The conjugation for る -verbs is the simplest of all; remove る then add て. For example, おきる becomes おきて. The conjugation for う -verb is subcategorized into 5, according to the final syllable of their dictionary form. 1. For う つ る ; remove う / つ / る then add って. Thus, まつ becomes まって. 2. For む ぶ ぬ ; remove む / ぶ / ぬ then add んで. Thus しぬ becomes しんで. 3. For く * ; remove く then add いて. Thus きく becomes きいて. 4

4. For ぐ ; remove ぐ then add いで. Thus いそぐ becomes いそいで. 5. For す ; remove す then add して. Thus かえす becomes かえして. *With exception for 行く, whose final syllable is [ く ], however instead of adding [ いて ] we add [ って ]. The conjugation of irregular verbs is best to be memorized since there are only two. する becomes して. くる becomes きて. W. Brute Force The conjugation of う -verb in Te-form demands repetitive practice before you feel comfortable enough to use them with ease. Please conjugate the following う -verbs into appropriate Te-form. For new vocabulary, please provide its meaning in parenthesis. 行く行って飲む飲んではなすはなしてあうあって かくかいてとるとってかえるかえってきくきいて のるのってよむよんでわかるわかってかうかって まつまってけす (turn off) けしてすわる (sit) すわって たつ (stand) たって いそぐ (hurry) いそいで あそぶ (play) あそんで かえす (return) かえして てつだう (help) てつだって 5
