16 歴 史 中国の海の物語 羅針盤の発達 (3) * 今村遼平 138 号世界をリードした中国の造船技術 (1) 1 BC8 世紀にはじまる鉄針の利用 中国の歴史は, 前 17 世紀にはじまり, いわ ゆる < 鉄器時代 > は, 前 8 世紀ころからはじ まる このため, この時代には縫い針の材質 も骨から鉄に変わった それと同時に, 天然 磁石が鉄の針を引きつけることや磁化した鉄 針を水に浮かべると, 必ず南北を指し示すこ となどが分かってきた それが中国における 磁針利用のはじめである これ恐らく鉄針を 利用しはじめて 1,2 世紀の間のことであっ たろう 時代はずっと下がるが, 秦始皇帝 ( 前 259 テロ - 前 210) は数回にわたって刺客におそわれ けいかたことがある 刺客の荊軻 (?-B.C.227) や ちょうりょう のちに漢の劉邦の名参謀となる張良 (?- 前 189) が始皇帝を襲ったことは 史記 に詳し い こういう事件があったため, 秦始皇帝の 宮城の城門には磁針計が仕掛けられていて, ここから鉄製の武器を隠しもって入城しよう とする者があると, 磁力によって磁針がふれ てすぐに見破られる仕組みになっていた 恐 けいからくこの仕掛けは刺客 荊軻が毒を塗った鋭 利なあいくちを地図の巻物に巻いて 献上品 と称して持参し, 地図を開く際に始皇帝を殺 * アジア航測 顧問 技師長 前号までの概要 かじ 1 舵の発明 2 船体の防水区画 3 多数マストとラグルス帆の発明 139 号世界をリードした中国の造船技術 (2) 1 ジャンクとサンパン 1.1 外洋ジャンク 1.2 内河ジャンク 1.3 サンパン 2 外輪船の発明と発達 す武器に使ったこと ( 図 1: この時は間一髪 のところで急所を外れて始皇帝は助かってい る ) をきっかけに, テロ防止策として仕掛け られたものであろう 詳しくは 史記 刺客 列伝を参照されたい 図 1: 前 227 年, のちに秦の始皇帝となった秦王を, 木 箱から取り出した巻物の絹地図に隠していた匕首で暗 殺せんとする荊軻 ( 左 ), 右側に王が跳びすざろうとす るのが見え, 中央には房のついた匕首が柱でそらされ, その根もとには地図箱がある そのかたわらには荊軻が はんおき秦王に献呈した樊於期の首の入っている別の箱がある この画像石は武梁祀にあるものの 1 つ (147 年 ) である 2 中国最古の磁針 中国人によるこのような天然磁石で磁化し た磁針の利用は, 確実に前 4 世紀にさかのぼ ることができる 中国の思想史上有名な じゅうおうかきこくせんせいきこくし縦横家の祖とされる鬼谷先生著の 鬼谷子 ( 実際には鬼谷先生の教え子であり前 4 世紀 その蘇 しん秦 (?- 前 317) の著作であろうと考えら れている ) の一節には, いの人々は玉てぎょくを取り
