13 What Calls for Thinking? : Between Children and Philosophy Naoki HOMMA Philosophy for Children is a curriculum for 6-16 year olds developed by Matthew Lipman and his associates. Lipman emphasized the importance of inquiry of meanings and thinking skills in the development of reasoning ability. He wrote stories wherein character dialogue reveals the main philosophical issues. Teachers use these stories accompanied with teacher s manuals as a basis for discussion in the class, called Communities of Inquiry. Under the title of The Philosophy of Childhood, on the other hand, Gareth B. Matthews is a searching account of children s philosophical potential and of childhood as an area of philosophical inquiry. He prefers philosophically provocative literatures for children such as stories of Arnold Lobel s Frog and Toad together sparkling with wit and Socratic irony. In this paper we try to compare these two different kinds of philosophical inquiry with children in terms of the application of philosophy into the educational setting. John Dewey s philosophy of education furnishes us a suitable viewpoint to evaluate them. Democracy and Education shows that thinking occurs when things are uncertain or doubtful or problematic. All thinking is original and creative because no idea can be conveyed from one person to another. One thinks only by wrestling with the condition of the problem, seeking and finding his own way out. Matthews dialogues with children are regarded as excellent model of education when he shows empathy with children s wonderment, which is the dawn of philosophical insight, and participates in an activity, common experience.
