22 93 Summary of Articles On Some Problems of Alternative Space in Contemporary Arts Mao Inoue This thesis is a study notes on the social and artistic significances and backgrounds of an alternative space in the modern society of Japan, taking up one example of the alternative space in Osaka city. An alternative space means the space deserted warehouses or residential houses where modern arts are created and displayed by non profit organizations or individuals. Some spaces can be subjected to the targets for academic study but it is difficult to generalize the definition of alternative spaces as activities of alternative spaces, the back ground how they were crated and operation system are very versatile and different, when it comes to the era and the natures of spaces. The alternative space taken as an example here Alternative Space called Adanda located in Suminoe Ward Osaka city. I was personally involved in the operation of this alternative space as an intern for one and half year for the activities of exhibition and events operation. In the meantime, I have conducted the interviews with the manager, artists, audiences, participants, and exchanged views with other interns on the activities background story and their views. I also sought the common characteristics and social issues of alternative space in addition to study on adanda. It was disclosed to us after studies, but the common posture of an alternative space currently operated in a city is its critical attitude towards the contemporary arts and the society. Any alternative spaces are aiming at offering the communication space to the community with artistic performance but they are critical in contributing to the community and commercial arts, hence their first priority is placed on the creation of experimental expression by artists themselves. They do not intend to expand their activities but they try to emphasize that their activities are of rather private nature and the contents are extension of their day to day life and to maintain the size of operation minimum by individuals. There seems to be no barriers among audiences, operators, and artists which are significant to other artistic activities.

23 94 Their artistic performance respects both joys and comforts, but they are regarded as sub cultures against conventional society and arts through their artistic performances.it was revealed there are two significances as alternative spaces. First one is that the artistic significance that appeals experimental artistic performance and develop young artists, and the second one is the social significance and back-ground to pursue the better way of life as a human being.
