12 Counters... are used for counting things in general, but there are other different counters for certain items depending on what you are counting. (-mai) is used for flat and thin items. (paper, tickets, shirts, etc.) (-hon)is used for long items. (pencils, flowers, umbrellas, etc.) (-satsu)is used for bound materials.
