31 Newspaper Reports about the Dispute over Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands : Analyzing Editorials of the Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun from 1972 to 2012 Weiwei Ding Since the diplomatic relations between Japan and China have been normalized in 1972, they have always been changing. Starting from the 90s, the sense of rivalry and mutual distrust on various levels has been growing in both countries. The 2010 Senkaku boat collision incident brought the deterioration of Japan-China relations to the world s attention. In this paper, I analyzed the editorials of the Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun from 1972 to 2012 by using content analysis and quantitative content analysis. It became clear that the difference between the two newspapers stances on the topic resulted in a difference in the emphasis of reports and the tone of the editorials. On the other hand, as the dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands became more intense, the editorials of both Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun started showing a clear tendency towards portraying the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands as Japanese territory. By examining the reports about today s Japan-China relations and the dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, we can see that there still remains a dilemma between emphasizing the dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and recognizing the importance of the relations between the two countries.
