20 Ingemar Chalmers University of Technology Opponent Examining committee member Golbal The First Experience of the Opponent at the Defense in Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden Norimasa Iida (Keio University) In Gothenburg, Sweden, where is the hometown of Volvo, there is Chalmers University of Technology. On the end of last September, Professor Ingemar Denbratt, who is the professor of Division of Combustion and Multiphase Flow, Dept. of Applied Mechanics at Chalmers University of Technology had contacted to me to ask whether I could accept for the opponent of Ph.D thesis entitled with Low Emissions Concepts for Diesel Engines. In Sweden, the supervisor can not join the committee which judges the Ph.D thesis written by his student. Thus, the supervisor must request the person who belongs to the other university to be an opponent of the grading committee. Moreover, he also asked a few persons to be members of the grading committee. The grading committee judges whether the Ph.D thesis is passed or not. He requested me to be an opponent of Ph.D thesis written by Mr. Arian Helmantel who came from Holland, which would be finished at the beginning of March, According to Professor Denbratt s memory, it may be the first experience for this division to ask Japanese professor to be an opponent. Previously, they have invited many professors who come from United States. However, he also said that for the thesis concerned with internal combustion engines of automotives, he sometimes wants to invite Japanese professor as an opponent. Professor Jin Kusaka who is spending his sabbatical terms at this university also let me know how the defense proceeded and the names of previous opponents (for examples: LLNL, Dr. C.K. Westbrook, U.C Berkeley, professor R.W. Dibble etc.) As it is very honorable, I decided to accept an important duty from the one of the famous universities in Europe. As there is no direct flight form Tokyo, I arrived at Gothenburg international airport bound for Copenhagen in the evening on 8 th March, On the next day, Professor Ingemar Denbratt introduces Chalmers University of Technology. He also took me his laboratory tour. After that, I had a brief presentation about research topics at my laboratory. At this night, Professors Ingemar Denbratt and Valeri Golovitchev who did mainly numerical simulations at the same division, Jin Kusaka, Mr. Arian Helmantel and I enjoyed to have a dinner. At 10:00 on 10th March, the defense was started. As the defense is opened to other persons, there are not only the supervisor, grading committee, staff of the university but also the student s parents, the girl friend, friends at the divisions, OB working in automotive industries in the examination room. At the beginning, professor Ingemar Denbratt greeted to everyone in the room and introduced Ph.D student, Mr. Arian Helmantel. After this, we moved to the main topics. Firstly, Mr. Arian Helmantel gave a presentation for 45 minutes about his Ph.D thesis. Secondary, my turn came to start for discussion between the student and the opponent. The opponent has one or two hours which is mainly dependent on the opponent. As shown in Picture 1, I asked him several questions by the use of the blackboard. The first question was about the priority of local air 20

21 pollutant, NOx and PM or global warming products CO 2. The second question was about soot reduction mechanism for the multi injection strategy and flame temperature measurements results described in his thesis by the use of the two colors method. Finally, we discussed about how to reduce CO emission and how to promote the reaction from CO to CO 2 in HCCI combustion. The Ph.D student must answer as soon as he can during everyone sitting in the room watch him. It is a great tough job for him! Fortunately, Mr. Arian Helmantel gave good answers to me. After my questions, members of grading committee (Professor B. Johansson at Lund University, Dr. J Engstrom form Volvo Technology and Dr. O Andersson from Volvo Car Co.) gave some questions. After this, the audience in the room gave questions. After the defense was over, the grading committee and the supervisor had a meeting to judge the doctorial thesis. Firstly, the chair man was chosen to have a free discussion during which it was prohibited for members to take a note. Thus, every member reveals his real intention in the meeting. I cannot describe the contents of the free discussion in this article. When there were tough opinions, the supervisor may answer such questions, occasionally. On the other hands, at the floor of the division, the staff was arranging something to drink, beer, coffee, cakes (This cake is not sweet. It is the Swedish cake topping with cheese, salmon, caviar etc.) to prepare a celebration party. The Ph.D student is waiting for the judge result of his doctorial thesis. Waiting for minutes, his supervisor and grading committee came in the floor to declare his success and every one toasted with champagne. As shown in Picture 2, the celebrate party had been continued for about 1 hours. In the party, the division gave the new doctor the witty memento. In this case, it was the jack for the car because the new doctor likes car maintenance very much. At that night, the supervisor and I were invited to the new doctor s house to have a dinner. It is said that many Ph.D students tend to get job in industries recently after his defense. However, Dr. Arian Helmantel plans to remain at this division as a post doctorial researcher because he is a capable especially for engine experiments. As for me, it was very exciting a few days at Chalmers University of Technology, although I made serious efforts to do a great job.
