1 Plain forms These are the plain forms of all parts of speech ( い -adjectives, な -adjectives, nouns, and many but not all verbs introduced through Chapter 11). い -adjectives たかい "high, expensive" 高い たかくない高くない たかかった高かった たかくなかった高くなかった たかくて高くて な -adjectives and nouns きれいだ pretty" アメリカ人だ American" きれいじゃない アメリカ人じゃない きれいだったきれいじゃなかった アメリカ人だった アメリカ人じゃなかった きれいで アメリカ人で う -type verbs The "stem" is the part of the verb which is found in ALL forms of the verb. For う - type verbs, the stems all end in a consonant, k, s, t, etc. They are called う -type because an う is added to the stem to create the plain form. In traditional Japanese grammar, the verbs are categorized based on what this consonant is (thus the labels k-type, s-type, etc. below). Note that the ~ ている form and its translation are only given some of the time. This is because the ~ ている form actualy has two interpretations and with many verbs the other interpretation is more usual (covered in Japanese 203). Dictionary Negative Past Past negative て -form ~ ている k-type きく "ask, きかないきいたきかなかっきいて聞いている

5 ある "be, exist" ない There is actually some irregularity with ある here. あった なかった And here. あって あっている "(It) is here. For る - type verbs, the stems can be written completely in ひらがな. They are called る -type because a る is added to the stem to create the plain form. It is pretty easy to confuse the る -type of verb with the r-stem verbs above. Compare the two lists. いる "be, exist" おきる "get up" 起きる いないいたいなかったいて おきない起きない おきた起きた おきなかった起きなかった おきて起きて いている here, exists" 起きている " is awake, is up" たべる "eat" たべないたべたたべなかったたべて食べている
