5 19/0/2015 Qualifying A Noun 1. The Term Qualifying It means to add description about the noun, either expressed in a word or phrase, directly to it. More commonly known as modifying a noun in grammar. e.g., There is a Japanese newspaper over there. Adjective Noun 6 Qualifying A Noun continues 2. Words that Can Be "qualifiers" for Nouns い Adjectives: おもしろい 人 a person who is funny な adjectives: しずかな 人 a person who is quiet い Adjective phrases: かみがながい 人 a person who has long hair な adjective phrases: ねこがすきな 人 a person who likes cats Verb phrases: Tシャツをきている 人 a person who is in T-shirt 7

Sue lost her key. = simple past tense = not connected with the present Telling the fact that Sue lost the key without implying whether she is still with or without her key. b. Sue has lost her key. = perfect tense = connected with the present Sue lost the key, and she is still without her key. 5 もう~ました & まだ~ていません continues 日 本 語 Type a simple past sentence Type b (connected to the present) Affirmative: もう + the past tense forms [あしたかんじのしけんがあります ] 私 はもうだい 九 かのかんじをおぼえました I have already remembered L9 Kanji. Negative: まだ + ~ていません [あしたかんじのしけんがあります ] 私 はまだだい 九 かのかんじをおぼえていません I have not remembered L9 Kanji yet. 6

9 24/0/2015 もう~ました and まだ~ていません continues Notes The negative answers to Yes-No questions with もう~ました = Connected to the Present Always in まだ~ていません e.g., Q:もうだい 九 かのワークブックをしましたか A: はい もうしました Yes, I have already done. いいえ まだしていません No, I have not done it yet. いいえ しませんでした No, I did not do it. 7 Expressing a Reason in One Sentence: ~ から ~ から also can be used to introduce the reason as a part of the main sentence. In this use, から can conjugate with both long- and short-forms. e.g., I often go to Mangiare, because pizzas are tasty. ピザがとてもおいしいから よくマンジャーレに 行 きます [Short form] or ピザがとてもおいしいですから よくマンジャーレに 行 き ます [Long form] 8 4

In formal situations, particularly in request, invitation, suggestion, permission sentences More appropriate to use long forms before から じかん e.g., 時 間 がありますから えいがを 見 ませんか あるから Would you like to watch a movie? = Invitation きょう やす 今 日 びょういんへ 行 きますから クラスを 休 んでも いいですか 行 くから May I be absent from the class? = Permission 10 5
