62 Learning and improving a foreign language is a lifetime work. I hope I can help you develop skills in reading, speaking, and writing in English. Hello. I am an American man named Darrow who has been living in Japan and teaching English since I believe that I can help any student improve his/her ability to communicate in English. I also think that studying a language should be fun. See you in class! Your goal: to speak, in English, with people from around the world. To make friends, share ideas and experiences, enjoy exchanges, gain memories. My goal: to help you to reach your goal. Step by step, we can work together to help you understand English words and sentences, and the cultures behind the language. It is not an easy journey, but treasures wait for you along the way. Let's walk together! Do you like tasting good wine? What about tasting good "words"? "Story telling" in English is an excellent way to enjoy the words, wit and the wisdom of the writer. Over the years, I have developed this interactive reading circle and have come to realize that children's books should be read aloud. Let me light a candle in your heart and help you become a lifelong story-appreciator/-reciter. Friendly, happy, supportive, challenging, energetic, and most importantly fun classes. I strongly believe that learning should "feel" natural; something you can look forward to each week, and come away feeling mentally stimulated, and happy to have met friends. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you! I like to emphasize three things in my classes. The first is to be relaxed, dont be afraid to joke or laugh. The second is to be willing to both speak and listen. It is important to be able to respond to not only what the teacher says but also what other classmates have to say. Students at the Waseda Ext. Center have many interesting things to talk about. Finally, be prepared. Also come to class prepared to talk briefly about at least one event that has happened to you in the past week. Hello everyone, please visit my website petesensei.com for lots of advice on learning English. You will find sample materials from my course textbooks, and applications to help you study. If you have any questions please send me an from the 'contact' page on my website. 60

140 I hope that students will be able to bring up their confidence in using English. This can be achieved through repetition, review and recitation in class and outside of class. English classes are a place to learn not only listening and speaking skills, but also to learn many other things About other countries, other people, even about yourself. Brush up the basics in Friday Afternoon Challenge, and go on to improve your confidence and express your opinion in Reading & Discussion. 1. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. 2. Don't forget that practice makes perfect. 3. Make the best use of your dictionary. I believe that learning and mastering English takes time and effort, but I also believe that learning should be fun and interesting. That s why we always have stimulating class discussions in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The class will to help you improve your English communication skills (not only speaking and listening, but also reading and writing) through pair work, discussions and journal writing. You will also meet other students, work with them, share ideas and make new discoveries that go beyond studying English. As a teacher, it is always a thrill and a pleasure to work with such a unique and talented group of students here at the Waseda Extension Center. Join us and I m sure you will agree! In this changing world, the ability to communicate effectively is more important than ever. As you consider how to improve your communication skills in English, it might help you to answer the following questions: 1. What is your specific need to learn English? Do you need English communication skills for work or for school or for pleasure? 2. What are your learning objectives? What are your goals? Do you want to improve your speaking, listening, reading, or writing? Do you want to learn business English, travel English, or everyday English? 3. How will you achieve your goals? Will you take a class or study alone or both? How much time will you study? Will you make a plan so that you can see your progress? I encourage you to think carefully about what you want to achieve through your English study and then to take action to achieve your goals. Good luck! 138
