3-7 分詞の形容詞的用法 (1) 分詞の形容詞的用法 進行 受動態 で名詞を修飾名詞を修飾する形容詞に 現在分詞および過去分詞を使うことを分詞の形容詞的用法と言う 例えば 走っている少年 とか 書かれた手紙 のようになる さらに少し長いが 犬と一緒に走っている少年 でも 昨日母によって書かれた手紙 も分詞の形容詞的用法だ (2) 単独の分詞を名詞の前に置く 単独の現在分詞や過去分詞を 名詞の前に持って来るのも形容詞的用法だ 普通の形容 詞と同じように扱う 設例 1 分詞を形容詞として使う 和訳はどうなるのか 進行形の場合 受動態の場合 a A boy is running. b The word is used. a running boy the used word ( 走っている少年 ) ( 使われた車 = 中古車 ) exciting interesting surprised などは昔 動詞の現在分詞や過去分詞だったが 分詞の形容詞的用法として使用され続けるうちに 今は形容詞 ( 必ず辞書で調べること ) として格上げされてしまったと考えられている 分詞の和訳を現在にするか 過去にするかは あまり神経質にならなくてよい [ 基本 1] 次の日本語にあうように並べ変えなさい 1. 働いている男の人 2. 勉強している少女 3. 歌っている3 人の子供達 man / a / working studying / a / girl children / three / singing 4. 見せられた写真 5. 使われたペン 6. 見られる景色 picture / a / shown used / a / pen the / landscape / seen 1
(3) 他の語句を持つので 長い 場合は 分詞を名詞の後ろに付ける 分詞以外に 修飾語や目的語などの他の語句があって 長い 場合は be 動詞は使わず に 現在分詞や過去分詞そして他の語句も そのまま名詞の後ろに付ける 設例 2 be 動詞を使わないことが 分詞の形容詞的用法の目印だ 進行の動作を形容詞にする場合 a 図書館で本を読んでいる 女性 the lady reading a book in the library 関係代名詞を使って the lady who is reading a book in the library としても同じ意味になる しかし the lady is reading a book in the library としたら その女性は図書館で本を読んでいる の主語 述語の普通の文になる これを混同して 関係代名詞を使っているのに be 動詞を抜いてしまい the lady who reading a book in the library とするのは完全なミスになってしまう b 校庭でサッカーをしている 男子たち the boys playing soccer on the school yard 受身の動作を形容詞にする場合 c ピカソによって描かれた 絵 the picture drawn by Picasso 2
d この本の中で使われている 言葉 the word used in this book ed を付ける規則変化動詞や A-B-B 型の不規則変化動詞を 分詞の形容詞的用法に使う時は 過去 形の本動詞 と受け取る勘違いが多い つまり d で the words used in this book を その単語が この本の中で使った としたら 少し変だな と思えるようになること 後置修飾のイメージが大切 * 日本語では 修飾語句が前にある ~ している ~ される 名詞 名詞 ~ している ~ される * 英語では 修飾語句が後ろにある [ 基本 2] 1. その女性によって演奏された音楽 by / the lady / the music / played 2. 私たちに英語を教えている先生 us / teaching / the teacher / English 3. 彼らによって私に伝えられたお話 me / told / them / the story / by / to 4. 夏の間に見られる景色 during / seen / the landscape / the summer 5. 彼らを喜ばせるニュース making / happy / them / the news 6. 先生によって私たちに出される宿題 us / given / my teacher / the homework / by / to 3
(4) 文中での使い方名詞は主語 S ~は と 目的語 O ~を に使うことができる その名詞を後ろから修飾する語句として分詞以下を付属させればよい ただし be 動詞は 分詞以下の中には使わないことが一番大切だ 設例 3 名詞 + 分詞の形容詞的用法を セットで考えよう 文尾にある名詞を修飾するパターン a I know the boys They are playing soccer on the school yard I know the boys playing soccer on the school yard 全体で目的語になっている ( 私は校庭でサッカーをしている男子たちを知っています ) b Do you like the picture It was painted by Picasso Do you like the picture 全体で目的語になっている painted by Picasso ( あなたはピカソによって描かれた絵が好きですか ) 主語を修飾するので 現在分詞や過去分詞で文を分断する形 c The boys They are playing soccer on the school yard are my classmates. The boys playing soccer on the school yard are my classmates. 全体で主語になっている ( 校庭でサッカーをしている男子たちは私の級友です ) 4
d The picture It was painted by Picasso is on the wall. The picture painted by Picasso is on the wall. 全体で主語になっている ( ピカソによって描かれた絵が壁にかかっている ) [ 基本 3] 分詞の形容詞的用法として [ ] 内の文を 前にある文中の下線付きの名詞に修飾語とし て付属させなさい 下線のある語が同一人物 同一物とします 1. I know the boy. [ He is studying Japanese ] 2. The children look happy. [ They are eating the cake] 切手 3. The letter has a nice stamp. [ It was sent from Tom] 4. Please eat the cookies. [ They were made by my daughter ] 5. He has a name. [ It is known to a lot of people ] [ 基本 4] 意味が通るように並び換えなさい 1. 学校で生徒を教えている人は教師と呼ばれる (the students / teaching / the person / is / at school ) called a teacher. 2. 私は彼が見せてくれた虫の名前を知っていた I knew the name (shown / the insect / him / by / of). 3. あの店で売られているカメラは中古品です (sold / at that / store / the cameras / are ) second-handed. 4. 私はそのコートを売っていた店へ行った I went to (the coat / selling / the shop). 5. 彼女によって紹介された男性は医者だった (by / introduced / was / her / the man) a doctor. 5
