No.84 A word from another world Hello everyone! Oda May Rånes My name is Oda May Rånes, please call me Oda. I am from a small island called Stord, which is situated in Western Norway. However, for the past three years I have been living in Norwich, England, where I studied Japanese and International Development Studies. I have also spent one year as an exchange student in Kyoto, which was an amazing experience. I really enjoy travelling, taking part in outdoor activities, meeting new people and eating good food. I am looking forward to doing all these things during my time in Higashikawa. Another reason why I am looking to forward to going to Higashikawa, is that there are many opportunities to go skiing, owing to the wintery climate. I am looking forward to meeting everyone soon! Greetings. Hannah Hayden Hello! My name is Hannah Hayden. I am a new JET coming from the United States. I was born in California and have lived in many states throughout my life, most recently Nevada. I am an English teacher in the US also. This year will be my fifth year teaching. My husband Jason will be coming to Japan with me as well. We love to travel, spend time outdoors and go hiking. We also love photography, art, and music. We are eager to learn more Japanese and become involved in the community. We can't wait to experience all the traditions, festivals, and try new food! Thank you for welcoming us to your town. A simple Jikoshoukai Kent Kitagawa Hello, My name is Kent Kitagawa and I am one of the new assistant language teachers here in Higashikawa. I come from a country with similar climate conditions as Hokkaido called Canada. Canada has a large land mass and long winters, although undesirable for most these conditions perfectly align with my interests and hobbies. During my free time, I enjoy taking part in playing hockey and freestyle skiing. So during my term in the Town of Photography, I hope to be able to continue these activities and experience the vast number of breathtaking locations within Hokkaido. The reason I wanted to take part in the JET programme was because my ethnic background is Japanese. So I am hoping to get in touch with my roots and learn about what it is like living in Japan. I am always looking to meet new people and making new friends. I look forward to meeting most, if not all of you in this town. Finally, I aim to fulfill my duties and help teach the younger students to the best of my abilities. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly Higashikawa. 12
