Abstract As ultra high definition television is planning on test broadcasting 2016, moving picture resolution enhancement is advancing in recent years. Increasing of calculation frequency required for the encoding is big problem of encoder implementation. Many idea for calculation frequency reduction had been proposed. Our laboratory has proposed course-fine hierarchical search method using 4 directional extended templates. It can provide both high estimation accuracy and low operation amount, for highly paralleling processing. We studied encoding using conventional moving picture compression standard H.264/AVC. But ultra high definition broadcast will definitely use next standard HEVC(H.265). Therefore the author researched efficiency improvement of the course-fine hierarchical search using 4 directional extended templates for HEVC.
