A CALL College Life CD-ROM Development of CD-ROM English Teaching Materials, College Life Series, for Improving English Communicative Skills of Japanese College Students The purpose of the present study was to develop a series of CD-ROM teaching materials for improving English communicative skills of Japanese college students who have a variety of English proficiency levels. In order to produce suitable sets of courseware, the Three-Step Auditory Comprehension Approach was newly developed and adopted as the basic theory in the development of the courseware. It incorporates learning principles from cognitive and behaviorist psychology and concepts from the field of information processing. A total of four sets of CD-ROM-based materials, First Listening, Introduction to College Life, College Life and College Life II, varying from an elementary level to an advanced level were developed using the interviews with professors, students, and administrative staff filmed at the University of California, Berkeley. A total of 46 college students registered in general education English classes participated in the evaluation of one of the developed materials. The result of the experiment measured by TOEIC scores and questionnaire surveys showed the high efficiency and effectiveness of the material.
