..-, (,**0 ) Abstract Cable TV that is closely related to regional societies : Its e#ects on a community A case observed in Yonezawa City Naoko OTANI Akihiko SHIMAZAKI In,*++, users of analog-tv broadcasting expect a big change, namely, the digitalization of analog-tv broadcasting. It will enable better quality, more multichannels, and more multi-media. It is expected that providing more channels via analog-tv broadcasting will make it closer to its users in a community, and as a result, cable TV itself, which has provided local information, will become less important as a local medium. In this study, we conducted a survey of local residents on how they use local channels via cable TV, and so investigated the e#ects of cable TV as a regional medium on a community. It was observed that local-channel viewers in Yonezawa City use all sorts and varieties of information media, not using only local information. It was also observed that they think highly of local channels as being very important media to boost their regional awareness and interest in a community. Consequently, we have found that local media, which here refer to local-information channels of cable TV, are potential media which not only compete against mass media, but also bring about the regional awareness and construction or reconstruction of regional societies and communities as well. 70
