A case of chondromyxoid fibroma of the rib Ryoichi Kato, MD1,3), Y oshimi Maenaka, MD1), Hisami Iri, MD2) 1 Department of Surgery, Saiseikai Kanagawaken Hospital, Yokohama, Japan 2. Division of Surgical Pathology, Clinical Laboratories, Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan 3. Presently Department of Surgery, Keio University School of Medicine. Tokyo, Japan A 6-year-old boy was referred to our hospital because of a tumor of the right seventh rib. On chest roentgenograms the tumor was seen as a translucent area with bulging of the eroded cortex. CT scan showed a small calcified area within the tumor: the CT number of the tumor was 28. Bone scintigraphy showed accumulation of 99mTC in the tumor. Tumor vessels and pooling of the contrast medium were seen on right seventh intercostal arteriography. The right seventh rib was resected with the anterior serratus muscle, periosteum of the sixth and eighth ribs and parietal pleura which were in contact with the tumor. The pathological diagnosis was chondromyxoid fibroma. Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rather rare benign bone tumor which seldom involves the ribs. The patient is well and healthy two and a holf years after the operation.
