Attendance was far in excess of previous years which gives a strong indication that, despite a very serious global recession, the mobile/wireless industry is performing exceptionally strongly, especially in the area of smartphones and tablets. Although, apart from a small selection of outstanding devices, most featured smartphones and tablets were already showing signs of obsolescence, and this highlights a central theme of this paper, namely, device manufacturers are struggling to differentiate their products in a highly competitive market. Given these market conditions, wireless careers and service providers seemed to be moving their attention toward applications, focusing on how smartphones and tablets can be used in daily life and within wider society. One of the most promising areas of application development is the embedding of NFC (Near Field Communication) chips in smartphones, for use in applications such as mobile wallets, an area of strong Japanese technology leadership. Attracting some of the largest names in the industry, such as Apple and Google, the technology is now emerging as a standard technology for the industry. Smartphones have the capacity to allow flexible usage of NFC, and it is anticipated that NFC applications are set to surge in both quantity and quality. Early signs of this trend were visible at this year s MWC, with collaborative efforts between major carriers and service providers.
