高 島 市 任 用 ALT 1. The best thing about Japan is my students. They are amazing people. I love each and every one of them, from the boy who loudly calls me Becky while proclaiming himself Keh-beeen, to the girl who always sits silently. From the exceptionally kind but academically average student who tries hard, but always misses key points, to the model students who always earn perfect scores. All of these different children are all beautiful and intelligent people. I am blessed that I was able to spend five years with them. When you live away from home, your friends, colleagues, neighbors, and students, fill the void in our personal support system that would normally be filled by relatives. Living in Asia is the perfect launching pad for exploring Asia. Half of my passport stamps have been acquired within my 5 years on JET. I love my placement, being able to walk along Biwako, surrounded by beautiful and peaceful nature, the numerous friendly neighbors, and my proximity to Kyoto. My only true complaint is, the JET program s transient and temporary nature. This limit teaches Japanese people and children not to get too close to us because we will only be here for a short time. Last week I watched as all but one of the second year students filled out of the classroom. The last boy I waited patiently for, wondering why he was just standing there. Then wondering why he appeared to be quietly talking to himself. I busied myself with some papers when he finally walked up to me and, with a look of great determination, said `I like Fullmetal Alchemist too!` I smiled, touching my pendant, and gladly walked through the conversation door he, this boy I had never spoken before, had opened.
Nothing has engaged as much voluntary conversation as my clothing and accessories consistently do. Groups of girls coming to the teachers` room to ask me questions about my new cowboy boots during lunch; a girl who every time I see her has a new makeup question for me; kids talking to me for twenty minutes because they want to go through all the charms on my bracelet; boys shoving their friends out of the way to be the first one to proudly tell me `I know who is on your shirt! It`s Captain America!`; I sit here in a Gryfindor shirt even as I write this. I have my makeup and hair done professionally and am also wearing black corduroy pants with a smart jacket, but I`m still wearing a Harry Potter shirt. Why? Because wearing a button down and slacks might look more professional, but it doesn t spark a loud, laughing, English conversation about which House is the correct one. 先 週 2 年 生 の 生 徒 がみんな 英 語 教 室 から 出 て 行 ったのですが 一 人 だけ 残 っていました どうして そこに 立 って 独 り 言 を 言 っているかなと 思 いながら その 生 徒 を 待 っていました すると 彼 は 一 大 決 心 をしたように 私 に 話 しかけてきました 僕 も 賢 者 の 石 が 好 きだよ と 私 はペンダントに 触 れ ながら 微 笑 みました この 生 徒 とそれまで 一 度 も 話 したことはありませんでしたが 彼 との 会 話 の 扉 が 開 けたのでした 私 の 洋 服 やアクセサリーは なによりも 生 徒 との 会 話 へのきっかけとなります 昼 休 み 職 員 室 に 来 た 女 子 のグループは 私 の 新 しいカウボーイブーツについて よく 見 かける 女 子 生 徒 は 新 しい 化 粧 につ いてたずねてきます ブレスレットについているすべてのチャームについて 20 分 間 も 私 に 話 しかけ てくる 生 徒 もいます 他 の 生 徒 を 押 しのけて そのシャツの 絵 は キャプテン アメリカだね! と 自 慢 げに 話 してくれる 男 子 生 徒 もいます 今 グリフィンドールのシャツを 着 ています 私 は 仕 事 をするのにふさわしい 化 粧 や 髪 形 きちん としたジャケットと 黒 のコーデュロイパンツも 着 ますが ハリー ポッターのシャツを 着 ることもあり ます それは 明 るく 笑 いながらする 英 会 話 を 引 き 出 すためなのです 3. I really have enjoyed the wildlife in Japan. I see monkey and deer and tanuki all the time as I travel around my area. I love seeing them, but more than that, I love seeing the insects here. When I first came here five years ago, I was greeted in the morning by the Cicadas. We have them back in Georgia, but they always seem to be far away, up in the trees somewhere. In japan they are a little different. When they are around, they are everywhere, flying away and shrieking in alarm as you walk past them. When I think about Japan, that is the sound I think of. Another critter I love is the dragonfly. Again we have them where I come from, but they are different from the ones I know. We don t have the six inch monsters that sometimes fly into the classroom in the summer. Actually, I think I could live without those. I don t like the way they fly wildly about the classroom, terrifying and disrupting the class. There is a ton of variety though. Outside my house, there is a small stream that I walk past on my way to school. It is under the shade of a big tree. When I go through, there are these cute little black winged dragonflies that fly
down the path in front of me. They flap their wings much slower than the dragonflies I m used to. They look more like a kind of alien butterfly than a dragonfly. On that same path, at night, in June, you can see fireflies. At home, they just light up for a moment and then go out. Here, they stay lit. I let one land on my hand, and he was just wandering all around, keeping his light on the whole time. It is really dark there at night, and it is really a magical experience to walk through them. Being able to see the wildlife here is one of the wonderful benefits of a rural placement. I miss having stores open around the clock, but the nature here more than makes up for it. 日 本 の 野 生 生 物 を 見 るのはとても 楽 しいことです ここ 朽 木 では よく 猿 や 鹿 タヌキなどを 見 かけ ます 動 物 を 見 ることは 好 きですが もっと 好 きなのは 昆 虫 を 見 ることです 5 年 前 朽 木 に 来 たとき 蝉 の 声 を 聞 いて 朝 を 迎 えました 故 郷 アメリカのジョージア 州 にも 蝉 はい ますが 木 の 上 のどこか 遠 くで 鳴 き 声 が 聞 こえます それに 比 べ 日 本 の 蝉 は 少 し 違 い そこら 中 でかん 高 く 鳴 いています 日 本 と 言 えば 蝉 の 鳴 き 声 だと 言 えるほどです 昆 虫 で 私 が 好 きなのはトンボです トンボもアメリカのものとは 違 います アメリカでは 6インチもの 大 きなトンボが 夏 の 授 業 中 に 教 室 に 入 ってくることはありません 教 室 にトンボが 入 ってくると 授 業 が 乱 されるので 困 ります でも トンボにはたくさんの 種 類 があって 学 校 へ 行 く 途 中 にある 小 さな 小 川 では 黒 い 翼 の 小 さくてかわい いトンボがゆっくり 飛 んでいるのに 出 会 います その 姿 は トンボというより 見 知 らぬ 国 の 蝶 のようで す また 6 月 の 夜 には 蛍 が 見 られます 故 郷 の 蛍 は 一 瞬 光 ったかと 思 うと すぐに 消 えてしまいます が 日 本 の 蛍 は 光 り 続 けます 手 の 上 にのせると しばらくの 間 光 っています 夜 はとても 暗 く そこ を 通 り 抜 けるのは 魅 惑 的 な 経 験 です このような 生 き 物 が 見 られるのが 田 舎 暮 らしの 良 いところです 都 会 のようにお 店 はないけれど 自 然 がその 埋 め 合 わせをしてくれています 4. It s essay time. It s soon leaving time. It s tick-tick-tick, look at all the time that s raced by, at what is now looming. I d write about my students again, about how I love seeing them grow, and how we keep in contact after they ve graduated. I d mention that speech contest and debate have been the highlight of my time here But that s already well known, and I feel I should introduce something new. My school is conservative, my community full of elders. I don t have the same atmosphere I hear about from others. My co-workers don t really socialize out of school. There are no massive parades full of staggering drunkards. There is amazing an Italian restaurant though, run by one man, with the oddest hours. There s the volunteer café for elderly where we all the women try to convince me to bring my boyfriend in for ogling. The P.E. teacher and I joke about co-ordinating our toilet breaks and how I have old Japanese man taste in food, the secretary always forgives my slack return of forms and gives me treats I don t deserve. I ve learned to really appreciate these small things. The relationships developed over my two years here are indispensable in making the life I ve had, and as my kids say I ll treasure them forever. P.S. I have two of the most kick-ass JTE s ever and I can t express how wonderful it has been to

Having chosen Tokyo as my placement preference on my JET application, it's safe to say that I would have preferred not to have ended up in rural Japan. The years I spent growing up in a small village in Ireland left me craving the bright lights of a large city and the exciting opportunities I could find in such a place. However, after ten months of living in Takashima-cho with its population of just a few thousand, my opinion of "inaka" life has changed dramatically. True, there isn't much to do here in terms of entertainment, but the satisfaction I've received from feeling part of this community more than makes up for that. From greeting my elderly neighbour every morning on my way to work, to conversing in (very poor) Japanese with my lollipop man, to almost always bumping into my students when I go to the conbini, I am constantly made to feel like I belong here. Perhaps the most overwhelming example of warmth I have felt since arriving has come from the Shimoda family who live nearby. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Shimoda have been welcoming the Takashima ALT into their home on a weekly basis for dinner. Without asking for anything in return, they prepare outstanding traditional Japanese food and spend hours hosting despite being very busy running their local fish shop. To say that they've made me feel like a part of their family would be an understatement. They have been an invaluable resource for me and have told me so many fascinating stories about their lives while I teach them about my culture. Whenever I'm having a bad day and wish I was back home, I think of these types of cross-cultural interactions that rural Japan affords me and I am reminded of my purpose here and what a life changing opportunity this has been. ませんでした アイルランドの 小 さな 町 で 育 ったので 大 都 市 のにぎやかさや 明 るいネオン 面 白 い 経 験 ができることがとても 楽 しみでした しかし 人 口 が 数 千 人 ほどの 高 島 町 で10ヶ 月 過 ごして 田 舎 に 対 しての 想 いが 劇 的 に 変 わりました 実 際 ここには 娯 楽 があまりありませんが 地 域 の 方 とのつながりは 私 を 満 足 させてくれます 毎 朝 学 校 へ 向 かう 途 中 で 横 断 歩 道 で 立 っておられる 指 導 員 の 人 と 挨 拶 を 交 わしたり コンビニで 生 徒 と 会 って 話 したりすることが 多 く この 地 域 に 馴 染 んでいると 感 じます そんな 中 で 一 番 温 かくて 良 い 経 験 は 下 田 夫 妻 との 関 わりです 下 田 さんは 近 所 の 人 で 長 年 高 島 の ALT を 週 に1 回 程 度 夕 食 をごちそうして 下 さいます 何 の 見 返 りを 期 待 することなく 魚 屋 の 仕 事 の 忙 しい 合 間 をぬって 素 晴 らしい 伝 統 的 な 日 本 の 料 理 でもてなして 下 さいます まるで 本 当 の 家 族 のように 思 えます 彼 らは 私 にとってかけがえのない 存 在 です 私 が 自 分 の 国 の 文 化 について 語 っていると 面 白 い 自 分 たちの 経 験 についても 話 して 下 さいます 私 が 落 ち 込 んだ 時 や 自 分 の 家 に 帰 りたいと 思 う 時 は 日 本 の 片 田 舎 での 文 化 交 流 を 思 い 出 すようにしています 6. My students found out I can do the running man. Specifically, the Sandaime running man : The idol dance move where you point out over the audience while you run in place. It s not hard. But the first time I attempted it, at the request of some third year girls, they lost their mind. For about two weeks after, I couldn t go a day without hearing ROBIN! Running man! in the halls. Or from a second story window. Or from softball practice as I walked by. Girls who weren t even there that first time knew about it. And they thought it was hilarious. I guess teachers don t usually perform idol dance moves here. It s like I m on cultural exchange across a generation gap, not just across the world. Pop culture is a common language for teens, and I m picking it up in the same faltering way that I m learning Japanese. But like any language, the native speakers love that I m even trying broken grammar and all. I ve started listening to some Sandaime J Soul Brothers. It s not so different from boy band fare anywhere else. But what s strange is that I m starting to like it 生 徒 たちが 私 が ランニングマン を 踊 れることを 知 りました 具 体 的 に 言 うと 三 代 目 の ランニングマン すなわちランニングのダンスステップをしながら 観 客 に 指 を 指 すあのアイドルグループのダンスの 動 きです それは 難 しいものではありません でも 3 年 生 の 生 徒 たちのリクエストで 私 が 初 めてそれをやって 見 せたとき 彼 女 らはものすごく 歓 喜 したので す その 後 2 週 間 ぐらい 廊 下 で 二 階 の 窓 から 部 活 のソフトボールの 練 習 中 に 横 を 通 ったときなど ロ ビン!ランニングマン! という 声 を 聞 かない 日 はありませんでした 最 初 に ランニングマン をや ったときその 場 にいなかった 女 子 生 徒 ですら 私 の ランニングマン のことを 知 っていたのです 彼 女 たちは これはすごいことだと 思 ったようです というのは 普 通 先 生 は 学 校 でアイドルのダンス などしないのです
これは 単 なる 国 際 交 流 というよりジェネレーションギャップを 越 えた 文 化 交 流 のように 思 います ポ ップカルチャーはティーンにとって 共 通 語 であり 私 は 日 本 語 を 学 んでいるのと 同 じように 試 行 錯 誤 しながら 彼 女 たちとの 共 通 語 を 見 つけていっているのです でも どの 言 語 も 同 じですが その 国 の 人 たちは 私 がたどたどしい 言 葉 で 話 そうとしているのをとても 好 意 的 に 接 してくれます たとえ 文 法 的 には 間 違 っていたとしても 私 は 三 代 目 J ソウルブラザーズの 曲 をいくつか 聴 き 始 めました それはよくあるバンドとそんなに 違 い はありません でも 不 思 議 なことに 私 はだんだんそれが 好 きになり 始 めたのです 7. I was initially happy to be in Shiga because I wanted to be in the center of Japan. I soon discovered that my part of Shiga wasn t as central as I first thought. Most of the frustration of living in my part of Japan comes from its inconvenience. Although the bare minimum is available at my local conbini, anything else requires a good bike ride in the summer or using the train in the winter.even though this situation can be very annoying, I wouldn t trade my placement for any other. I have access to nice mountains, small local onsens, good little family owned restaurants, a lakeside beach and a famous sakura road. Moreover, as my Japanese improves, I am able to meet the very nice people of my community, and learn more about their local culture. Had I shunned the idea of living in the countryside, I wouldn t have seen the great things my community can offer.i believe wherever you re placed, the only way to be happy is to learn to like your community and find solutions to your limitations. After my time on JET is done, I would like to point to the first place I lived in Japan and say, That s where I first discovered Japan. 日 本 の 中 心 地 に 住 みたいと 思 っていたので 当 初 滋 賀 に 住 めるようになって 喜 んでいたのですが す ぐに 思 っていたほど 滋 賀 は 中 心 地 ではないということを 知 りました ここに 住 むことで 困 難 なこと それは 不 便 だということです 最 低 限 のものはコンビニでなんとかな るのですが そのほかのものがほしい 時 は 夏 だと 自 転 車 冬 だと 電 車 が 必 須 アイテムです こんな 状 況 ではあるのですが 私 は 他 のところへ 変 わりたいとは 思 いません なぜなら ここには 美 しい 山 々 小 さな 地 元 の 温 泉 温 かい 家 族 が 経 営 するレストラン 湖 岸 にあるビーチ 有 名 な 桜 ロード があるからです そして 何 よりも ここには 親 切 な 人 々がいて この 地 域 の 文 化 を 教 えてくれます こ れが 私 の 日 本 語 の 上 達 につながっています もし この 田 舎 に 住 むことを 避 けていたなら 私 はこの 地 域 の 良 さにふれずに 過 ごしてしまうことになったでしょう どこに 配 置 されたとしても その 地 域 を 好 きになり 困 難 を 克 服 する 解 決 策 を 見 いだせば 幸 せに 暮 らすことができます JETを 終 えたら 私 は 日 本 で 初 めて 住 んだところについて このように 言 いた いと 思 います 日 本 発 見 だ! と 8. After arriving in Shiga, I was most worried about adapting to rural life since I have always lived in a large city. Would I be able to meet Japanese locals, join any clubs, or make any friends? I believe
that making a new home includes becoming connected with one's loca lcommunity. One of the main goals I set for myself when coming to Japan was to improve my Japanese level, and I felt this was the best place to begin to meet people. Asking other JET friends as to where I can begin, I learned of an informal conversation class that is conveniently held in my town by a Japanese family. I decided to try it to get as much exposure to the language as possible. This weekly class would turn into my first step of integration into the community and also become what I look forward to every week. This family has been a surrogate family for JETs in my city for over a decade, and it is easy to understand how after meeting them. Although they teach Japanese, their English is at a strong conversational level and it is easy to communicate with them using both Japanese and English to get even complex points across. Through my time spent with them after conversation classes, we have been able to exchange more than just a language, but conversational colloquialisms, our country's cultures, and even our ways of thinking. The family has two children, one in junior high school, while the youngest is still in kindergarten. I have been able to connect with both kids by having a short English conversation with the older sibling, and playing with whatever toys the younger sibling brings up to me. I have been able to meet other friends through this family and these connections and invitations I receive to local events are invaluable to me. This friendship has not only given me insight into the subtleties of Japanese culture, but also created a friendship for life. 滋 賀 に 来 て 都 会 にずっと 住 んでいた 私 は 田 舎 生 活 になじめるだろうか 地 元 の 人 々と 知 り 合 い ク ラブに 参 加 し 友 達 ができるのだろうかと とても 心 配 していました 新 しい 生 活 を 始 めるということ は その 地 元 の 人 々とつながりをもつことだと 思 っていましたから 日 本 に 来 たときの 私 の 目 標 は 日 本 語 を 上 達 させることでした この 目 標 を 達 成 するには 人 と 出 会 うことが 必 要 ですが ここは 最 適 の 場 所 だと 感 じています 他 のJETが 私 の 町 のある 家 族 が 開 いて いる 気 さくな 日 本 語 教 室 があると 教 えてくれたので 行 ってみることにしました この 週 に 一 回 の 日 本 語 教 室 は 地 域 の 方 と 関 わる 第 一 歩 となり 毎 週 楽 しみになりました この 家 族 は10 年 以 上 この 町 のJ ETにとっての 家 族 のような 存 在 となっています 彼 らは 日 本 語 を 教 えてくださいますが 英 語 が 大 変 上 手 なので 複 雑 なことを 話 すときは 英 語 と 日 本 語 をまじえて 話 します 日 本 語 教 室 が 終 わると 私 た ちの 文 化 や 考 え 方 などについて 話 したり その 家 族 には 中 学 生 と 保 育 園 児 の 二 人 の 子 どもがいるので 中 学 生 の 子 とは 英 語 で 話 したり 保 育 園 の 子 とはおもちゃで 遊 んだりします また この 家 族 を 通 して 違 う 家 族 とも 知 り 合 いになり 地 域 のイベントに 招 待 してもらうなど 私 にとって 貴 重 な 体 験 をさせて もらっています この 関 わりは 私 に 日 本 文 化 を 教 えてくれるだけではなく 人 生 における 友 情 を 築 い てくれています 9. Since July of 2014, I have been working in Shin Asahi as an English assistant language teacher (ALT) for the two elementary schools and the two kindergartens in the town. This is my first experience working as an English teacher, and with the JET Programme, I have the wonderful
opportunity to live in the same town as the students I teach. For me, this means that at both inside and outside of the classroom, my days can be flooded with adorable, energetic, friendly reminders of the reasons why my role as an ALT here is so important, why I love my job, and why I should always give my 100% effort to this role. I always see my students around town: on my way home from work, at the train station, and at my local grocery shop, ACOOP. When shopping at my local grocery store, I always see my students with their parents. In the middle of the spice aisle or in line for the register, I get to see my students rushing to say Hello! and introduce me to their family. They use the English they ve learned to introduce themselves in front of their parents, and they ask when the next time I have English with their class is. When my students come to me to willingly use English like this, I can see how much they can genuinely want to learn. It s been two years since I came to Japan as an English instructor. Of course, I came to Japan for more selfish reasons than I want to teach ; I could have done teaching at home. But in that time that I have been here I have learned a lot of things I couldn t have done at home. I ve learned about Japanese kids (they are the same as Canadian kids) and Japanese culture. There are wonderful aspect of Japanese culture that I m thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in, and there are also the opposite. Overall, living in Japan is pretty cool and mostly positive. Since an important aspect of our job is being patient and having a thick skin, I believe that working here has improved my character. I feel stronger as a person than when I left. Of course, there are also some great promising students who have left very positive impressions. One girl who I saw graduate is cute and funny, and excels at every subject. When I asked her an
English question she didn t know the answer to, you could almost hear the gears turning until she gave a very satisfying, often perfectly correct answer. She had the right idea of what learning English is about. While some students are difficult and uninterested, there are always a special few who make it feel worth the time. 英 語 の 先 生 として 日 本 に 来 て2 年 になる もちろん 日 本 に 来 たのは 教 えたい という 思 いだけで 来 たのではない 自 分 の 国 でも 教 えることはできるのだから しかし ここにいる 間 に 自 分 の 国 では 到 底 学 べない 日 本 の 子 どもたち(カナダの 子 どもたちとよく 似 ている)や 日 本 の 文 化 等 について 多 く のことを 学 んだ 日 本 の 文 化 にはすばらしい 面 があり 自 分 が 体 験 できたことに 心 から 感 謝 するほどで ある 全 体 的 に 日 本 に 住 むということは とても 趣 があり とてもすばらしいことだったと 感 じている 仕 事 という 点 からは 我 慢 強 くならなければならないときもあり ここで 働 くことで 自 分 自 身 が 成 長 できたと 感 じている 来 たときよりも 人 として 強 くなった 気 がする もちろん 前 途 有 望 で 前 向 きな 印 象 をもつ 子 どもは 何 人 もいる 卒 業 の 時 に 出 会 ったある 女 の 子 はか わいくて 明 るく すべての 教 科 で 優 秀 だった その 彼 女 に 答 えられないような 英 語 の 質 問 をしてみ た すると 彼 女 は 自 分 が 満 足 できる 完 璧 な 答 えが 見 つかるまで いろいろと 切 り 返 し 質 問 をして きた 彼 女 は 英 語 を 学 ぶといういうことはどういうことか ということを 教 えてくれた 興 味 を 示 し てくれない 子 どもも 中 にはいたけれど その 子 たちも 一 緒 に 過 ごせてよかったと 感 じる 特 別 な 存 在 であ る 11. I tried getting into Japanese music when I first visited Japan. It proved difficult for me to get into a singer or group, as it seemed that many Japanese bands were simply imitating other Western bands styles rather than creating much of anything unique. I am glad that I didn t stop looking, though. While here on JET, I have found so much great music. Through attending some Japanese concert festivals and eventually some one-man tours (not to be confused with one-man trains ), I have found rich experiences in a part of Japanese culture that seems rarely explored-its modern music scene. Of course, I am not talking about the AKBs of the world. I am talking about artists who create tunes and sing about how they see their world. As I continued to understand Japanese language more, I found that many Japanese artists are more candid in what they will sing about compared with similar sounding Western counterparts. To think that music could be this deep; I wouldn t have believed it until I opened my ears. 初 めて 日 本 に 訪 れた 時 日 本 の J-Pop を 聞 いてみようとしたのですがその 時 にアメリカなどの 音 楽 を まねているだけのアーティストしか 見 当 たりませんでした でも 日 本 語 の 歌 に 興 味 を 持 ちたかったので 耳 を 傾 けているとすごく 深 い 音 楽 に 出 会 いました JET プログラムにいる 間 に 生 徒 などの 影 響 でたくさ んの 音 楽 にはまりました 外 国 人 があまり 興 味 を 持 ちそうでないと 思 われるフェスティバルやライブに 行 ったのです もちろん AKB48 などの 歌 手 でなく 今 の 時 代 をどう 見 ているかを 歌 っているアーティス トのライブです そのアーティストのおかげですごくいい 経 験 をしていました 私 は 日 本 語 が 理 解 でき
るようになるにつれて 日 本 人 アーティストの 方 が 自 分 たちの 思 いを 率 直 に 歌 にしていると 思 うように なりました 私 たちの 国 の 音 楽 を 比 べると 日 本 の 歌 の 方 が 深 いです 日 本 の 歌 に 耳 を 傾 けるようになっ てから 音 楽 はこんなにも 深 くて 面 白 いものだ という 風 に 思 っています
