The story of our favourite wine makers Pask is a leading New Zealand winemaker and one of the most established in Hawke's Bay. The North Island of New Zealand is the perfect location for creating wines of exceptional quality. Formed over 100 years ago when the Ngaruroro River changed its course, the light, stony soils of the region now known as the Gimblett Gravels are low in nutrients and completely free draining. From his perfect vantage point, local topdressing pilot Chris Pask believed the area would produce excellent grapes. He was right and was first to plant vines at Gimblett Road in 1981. Pask has earned an international reputation for its consistently excellent wine. Driven by a simple vision: to produce the finest wines from Hawke's Bay. Winslow Wines established in 1985, by Steve & Jennifer Tarring, Winslow Wines was a family owned and operated boutique winery producing a limited volume of ultra-premium wine styles. All wines are the product of hand picked single estate grapes, grown within the Martinborough region. The 2006 Cab/Sauv did not gain popularity locally and the vineyard was sold after their last vintage. Since then, the 2006 s unique classic French Bordeaux style has gained somewhat of a cult following. The Vineyard is New Zealand's first specialist Syrah producer. Single estate wines are created by owners Stephen and Lisa Daysh from high quality fruit grown on the free draining Taupo Pumice Sands of their Hawke's Bay vineyard. Bridge Pa Vineyard is 100% devoted to producing Hawke s Bay Syrah. Made in limited quantities of 500 bottles or less. Elegance, balance and complexity of aroma and palate have earned Bridge Pa Syrah a reputation for classic examples of Hawke's Bay Syrah that are food friendly, rare and perfect for the sophisticated restaurant wine list, discerning fine wine retailer and wine connoisseur. My first memory of wine being on the radar was at my grandparents place, Christmas dinner, when I was ten. Papa always fancied a drink, his martinis and G&Ts were the stuff of legend. He also loved entertaining, big dinners, a bottle or two of special wine on the table. There was always a story that went with it. Great wine is all about that. So, in 1993 I arrived in Hawke s Bay with a love for making wine and everything I owned packed into the boot of a small car. I spent nine years as winemaker at Vidal Estate in Hawke's Bay and was awarded New Zealand Winemaker of the year in 2006. I left later that year with a few ideas about what Hawke's Bay wines could be like, where the great ones would come from, and started Rod McDonald Wines.
