Japanese immigrants to Peru initially maintained Japanese food at home, but were influenced by the host society and later shifted to Japanese-Peruvian food. During Peru s process of reconstruction since 1990, Nikkei cuisine based on Japanese-Peruvian food has gradually been recognized. Along with the growing international popularity of Peruvian and Japanese food, new Nikkei fusion cuisine was also born. This research note seeks to present the way how the things people see as the Japanese traditional culture have been passed down and transformed in the Japanese Canadian community in Toronto. The author chose the Toronto Buddhist Church TBCto see how Japanese Canadians who are related to TBC celebrate the New Year s Days. Particular attention is paid to the food and the dishes they prepare for their festivity. The author believes that the result of this research serves as an interesting sample of the ways how the so-called Japanese tradition has been transformed and preserved in the Nikkei communities in North America. The author fully realizes the New Year s celebration is not the only occasion to seek for research materials. Further research should be conducted in other festive occasions or celebrations in the Nikkei community in Toronto. At the same time, in order to see the whole picture of the Japanese traditions which are preserved or transformed in Nikkei communities in North America, the research should cover other parts of North America. Caf Paulista was a name of coffee shop chain which began its business in 1911. Its founder, Ryo Mizuno, is often referred as Father of Japanese Immigrants to Brazil. Mr. Mizuno is famous for organizing the first immigrant ship, Kasato Maru, to Brazil. On the other hand, the fact that he functioned as a central figure for spreading Brazilian coffee culture into Japanese market is little known. It has been long considered that the first shop of Caf Paulista was in Ginza, Tokyo. Quite recently, however, it was discovered that the first shop was opened six months earlier in Minoo City, Osaka. And to our surprise, its colonial style building was still in use as Toyonaka Club in Toyonaka City, Osaka. But it was torn down in early October, 2013. Caf Paulista is important in two points, to say the least. First, it was founded by the initiative of Prefectural Government of São Paulo to open Japanese market, which has been neglected by scholars who study about Japanese overseas migration to Brazil. Second, Caf Paulista initiated mass culture of coffee consumption in Japan, but the story of which requires more consideration of the first shop of Caf Paulista in Osaka. This paper explores a history behind Song of the Brethren in the U. S., a music sheet. The document was donated by the original songwriter Motoko Saneto to the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum in August 2013. The year 1952 when the song was made saw a historical event: Japan became independent again after WWII. The event was very special not only for Japanese people but also for Japanese immigrants abroad. In November 1951, to commemorate the event, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Southern California decided to produce a Song of the Brethren in the U.S. and offered a prize for the best song. Miss Naomi Yuri pen name of Motoko Sanetowas the winner of the first prize announced on May 23. The lyrics was revised by Atsuo Ohki and the accompanying music was composed by Kosaku Yamada. Phonographic records were, reportedly, produced and made available to the public. The production of the records, however, is yet to be confirmed. The original lyrics by Naomi Yuri looks back long struggles of young Japanese immigrants in America, harsh life during the war incarceration, brilliant military achievements of Nisei soldiers, then, extols the bright future of the Nikkei. The song ends with a line wishing the Nikkei s paean resound in Japan.
