Relationship between Bar Exam and Legal Education in China: Focus on Circumstances and Arguments around 2008 Morikawa Shingo The number of law students in China has increased sharply since around 1977. By the 2000s, such increase gave rise to certain difficulties for many law students who sought employment in the legal industry. Meanwhile the Chinese government implemented a new national bar exam system in 2002. Since then, the significance of the Chinese bar exam has become increasingly great in the Chinese society. For instance, unless a law student successfully passes the bar exam, it would become extremely difficult for the law student to find suitable employment within the judiciary, law firms, and/or other branches of the legal field. This phenomenon has led the law departments of low tier universities and colleges in China to modify their legal education in order to better cater for the Chinese bar exam and thereby maximizing the departments success by enhancing their law students passing rate. This article highlights the curious phenomenon in China by introducing some of its details and demonstrating some of the ways in which certain law lecturers have dealt with this situation and by referring to some of their salient arguments. xii
