No.7, 379-390 (2006) Symbolism of Birds in The Chronicles of Narnia KAWAHARA Yuka Nihon University, Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies This paper is a study about the symbolism of birds in C. S. Lewis s The Chronicles of Narnia. In this fantasy novel, we can find many birds. It seems that each bird plays an important role in the story. The birds in The Chronicles of Narnia are classified into five kinds. First, some birds guide the characters into other worlds. Second, other birds appear before and after the appearance of Aslan the Lion. Third, there are talking birds. Fourth, Aslan transforms into an albatross. Finally, Tash, a god for Carolemen, looks like a bird. On the one hand, some birds are agents of Aslan, and one of them or the albatross represents Aslan himself on the other. It is only Tash who opposes Aslan. In conclusion, C. S. Lewis expresses his faith and his views of man and the world by the symbolism of birds. The Chronicles of Narnia,1950-1956 C.S. (Clive Staples Lewis, 1898-1963) 1. (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,1950)

It s an owl, said Peter. This is going to be a wonderful place for birds. You might find anything in a place like this. Did you see those mountains as we came along? And the woods? There might be eagles. There might be stags. There ll be hawks. (LWW p.5) 1 At this the Robin flew away again to the next tree and once more looked at them very hard. (You couldn t have found a robin with a redder chest or a brighter eye.) It kept going from tree to tree, always a few yards ahead of them, but always so near that they could easily follow it. In this way it led them on, slightly downhill. Wherever the Robin alighted a little shower of snow would fall off the branch. (LWW pp.60-1) 1 The Chronicles of Narnia The Chronicles of Narnia 1. (The Silver Chair, 1953) Instantly there was a quite different sound all about them. It came from those bright things overhead, which now turned out to be birds. They were making a riotous noise, but it was much more like music rather advanced music which you don t quite take in at the first hearing than bird s songs ever are in our world. Yet, in spite of the singing, there was a sort of background of immense silence. That silence, combined with the freshness of the air, That s a nasty idea. Still a robin, you know. made Jill think they must be on the top of a very They re good birds in all the stories I ve ever read. high mountain. (SC p.13) I m sure a robin wouldn t be on the wrong side. If it comes to that, which is the right side? How do we know that the Fauns are in the right and the Queen (yes, I know we ve been told she s a witch) is in the wrong? We don t really know anything about either. (LWW pp.61-2) 2004 42-44 381

(The Horse and His Boy, 1954) scarlet (The Last Battle, 1956) Phoenix 5 (The Magician s Nephew, 1955) There, on a branch above his head, a wonderful bird was roosting. I say roosting because it seemed almost asleep; perhaps not quite. The tiniest slit of one eye was open. It was larger than an eagle, its breast saffron, its head crested with scarlet, and its tail purple. (MN p.172) 5 500 Martha C. Sammons, A Guide through NARNIA. At the same moment the nightingale, satisfied at last with his tuning up, burst into full song. (PC p.116) 6 2000 295 7 295 383

(The Voyage of the Dawn 9 Treader, 1952) And soon after that the owners of these voices could be seen. They were birds, large and white, Then the birds stopped their singing and appeared to be very busy about the table. When they rose from it again everything on the table that could be eaten or drunk had disappeared. These birds rose from their meal in their thousand and hundreds and carried away all the things that could not be eaten or drunk, such as bones, rinds, and shells, and took their flight back to the rising sun. (VDT pp.206-7) 6 6 8 Haven t we been coming a shorter way? Didn t that Raven friend of yours say this was a short cut, Shasta? He didn t say anything about shorter, answered 8 Paul F. Shasta. He only said better, because you got to a river this way. (HHB p.136) 10 11 10 366 11 366 385

When Aslan said you could never go back to Narnia, he meant the Narnia you were thinking of. But that was not the real Narnia. That had a beginning and 12 an end. It was only a shadow or a copy of the real Narnia which has always been here and always will be here: just as our own world, England and all, is only a shadow or copy of something in Aslan s real world. (LB pp.194-5) 13 14 1 5-10 15 16 17 18 we have all been blind. We are only beginning to see where we are. From up there I have seen it all Ettinsmuir, Beaversdam, the Great River, and Cair Paravel still shining on the edge of the Eastern Sea. Narnia is not dead. This is Narnia. It called out in a strong sweet voice what seemed to be words though no one understood them. Drinian steered after it not doubting that it offered good guidance. But no one except Lucy knew that as it circled the mast it had whispered to her, Courage, dear heart, and the voice, she felt sure, was Aslan s, and with the voice a delicious smell breathed in her face. It had four arms which it held high above its head, stretching them out Northward as if it wanted to snatch all Narnia in its grip; and its fingers all twenty of them were curved like its beak had long, pointed, bird-like claws instead of nails. It floated on the grass instead of walking, and the grass seemed to wither beneath it. (LB p.92) Tash 21 22 But the deathly smell was not the smell of smoke.
