CURRENT AND FUTURE VALUES OF DESIGN IN CIVIL ENGINEERING FIELD Yoh SASAKI The author discusses design of infrastructures which basically serve as facilities of civilization. The main issues are how to recognize social demands changing over times and how to determine behaviors of design. The ideas of design in civil engineering field are arranged based on existing studies. The contemporary roles and values have changed over time making infrastructures not only as a tool but also as resource of regional identity. More over design in civil engineering serves as means of providing common grounds for communication and allowing users to form a sense of identity to that time and place. Some points on the designing process and its subjects to create those values are shown. Finally some suggestions for reconstruction design after the March disaster and the needs of accumulation of research on design activities are also described.
