176 --Abstract-- Ohokimi (*~) and Ohokisaki (*10) The Ti ties of a King and Queen in Ancient Japan YOSHIMURA Takehiko The title of a monarch in japan since ancient times has always been "emperor" or "tell110 ;R':." and the title of his legitimate wife is "empress" or "kogo ~Fo," These titles still remain adopted in japan. and it is clear that these titles were legally defined by the Kiyomihara Code (689) at latest, While the dominant view is that the title of telllzo started during the reign of Emperor Temm (r. 673-686). some argue that it started during the reign of Empress Suiko (r. 593-629). japanese ancient historians. however. still debate over the titles of japanese monarch and his legitimate wife before the seventh century. and some scholars even misunderstand sources. The dominant hypothesis is that the term "ohokimi *3::" or a great king was llsed prior to the adoption of the title of tenno. However. this hypothesis is not necessarily tested against textual evidence. Some speculate that the term "ohokisaki *Fo" was used prior to the adoption of the title kogo. but many scholars are critical about this. Frankly speaking. the titles of monarch and his legitimate wife in ancient japan still remain unknown. Against such background. discussion of the titles of ancient japanese monarch and his wife should be an important contribution to understanding about the history of ancient japan during the times of the Yamato Court and Ritsuryo state. In this paper. the author first reviews research into the title of ten no. Second. the author clarifies sources relevant to the issues of the titles of japanese monarch before the seventh century. reviews the history of research into this issue. and points out that the title of ohokimi was a honorific. Finally. the author argues that the title of taiko was also honorific, In other words. neither ohokimi nor ohokisaki was a formal. legal title.
