166 中 村 葉 子 The Eyes of Documentary Film The Film about Omen of Riot Yoko Nakamura The purpose of this paper is to analyze the documentary film "Motoshinkakarannu", produced by the Nippon Documentarist Union (NDU), based on both socio-political activity and other films made around the same time. In chapter one, I review how the increasing subjectivity of documentarists, which was problematized in the 1960s, was discussed in those days. Next, I demonstrate that the NDU s works and producers were different from those of its contemporaries through their unique approach to Okinawa and "motoshinkakarannu (=prostitutes)". In chapter two, I examine how the dynamics of the producers' eyes unfolded in their works through the representation of "motoshinkakarannu". In chapter three, I argue that the NDU s works and the methods of its producers were beyond the framework of documentarists' "identity-building", as described in chapter one, and that we can understand them as indicators for the direction of documentary films after the 1970s.
