The Japanese Master Shozo Awazu, and the History and Development of Judo in France Shinji Hosokawa 1, Takamasa Anai 2 Abstract Judo, which was created by Jigoro Kano has spread all over the world. It is now practiced by 200 countries, it also ranks 5 th after volleyball, track and field, basketball and soccer regarding practitioners. Above all countries, judo in France has taken the most steps to become the world leader in judo popularity. Now, the French judo federation has around 600,000 memberships. This article therefore tries to reveal the history and development of French judo and how the Japanese master, Shozo Awazu contributed to the development of judo in France. Up until now, there has been many researchers who published articles or books about another Japanese master, Mikinosuke Kawaishi, acclaiming his merit on French judo development. But up until Kawaishi s death, Awazu supported the development of French judo as Kawaishi s assistant. After Kawaishi s death, Awazu contributed to the development of French judo a lot more that Kawaishi has, but there is not much research about him. Awazu had an important relationship with Mr.Nakayama, the 2 nd chief of Tenrikyo and Awazu is also a consultant for the Tenri Judo Association. The purpose of this article is to uncover the roots and development of judo in France, as I try to bring the Japanese master, Shozo Awazu s light to the public. I hope this could indicate guidelines for the development of judo throughout the world. Faculty of Budo and Sport studies Part-time lecturer of Tenri University
