OSAKA UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE FACULTY OF MEDICINE 2016 OUTLINE
From rote learning to communication Inheriting the free and open academic character and fundamental forward-looking spirit of its predecessor Tekijuku, founded in Osaka by OGATA Koan, the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University has contributed to society and to the development of medicine in Japan and around the world, while also undergoing a number of changes in name. In the future as well, it will continue to play a leading role in world medicine as it ceaselessly communicates information on new medical science. 1838 1849 1868 1869 1869 1870 1870 1873 1879 1880 1888 1903 1915 1919 1931 1949 1993 1998 2004 2016 1838 OGATA Koan founds Tekijuku as a facility for medical education 1849 OGATA Koan founds Jotokan as a facility for technical education of Western-style doctors 1868 The Meiji Emperor orders the construction of a hospital at the Osaka court of law 1869 Osaka Provisional Hospital opened Headed by OGATA Koreyoshi and the Western doctor Anthonius Franciscus Bauduin 1870 Jotokan merged with the Osaka School of Medicine (to become Shutokan, the School s affiliated vaccination center) 1879 Osaka Public Hospital opened in Nakanoshima 1993 Osaka University Hospital was moved from Nakanoshima, Osaka to the Suita campus. OGATA Koan Tekijuku Historical landmark & important cultural asset Jotokan OGATA Koan was revered during the closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate as a leading Western-style doctor and educator on Western science through the Dutch language. Together with translating numerous Western works into English in order to introduce the latest medical knowledge to Japan, he also authored a number of works himself. Of these, the publication of his translation of Enchiridion medicum, or, the practice of medicine (30 volumes) was his life s work. This was a secondhand translation into Japanese of the Dutch translation of German doctor Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland s summation of his 50 years of experience as a physician. It contributed greatly to the advancement of internal medicine in Japan. Tekijuku was a school of Western science through the Dutch language founded in Osaka in 1838 by OGATA Koan. While teaching advanced Western subjects such as medicine and pathology, it also strived to promote and improve medicine through means including publishing guidelines for treatment of infectious diseases such as cholera, which was prevalent at the time. Students who studied under Koan, who was both a doctor and an outstanding educator, later served as a driving force behind Japan s modernization during the Meiji Period. Tekijuku graduated numerous exceptional talents including NAGAYO Sensai and FUKUZAWA Yukichi. Koan established this facility together with doctors HINO Katsumin and YAMATOYA Kihei, among others, in Osaka s Doshomachi in 1849, when smallpox was introduced to Japan, as a base for promoting natural prevention of smallpox. Use in Japan of the cowpox vaccine, developed in 1796 by the English doctor Edward Jenner, began at this facility (renamed Shutokan in 1870).
INDEX 06 Prize 08 Initiatives 10 Message from the Dean The origins of the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University can be traced back to Tekijuku, founded in Osaka in 1838 by OGATA Koan. Stepping forward to promote smallpox vaccination in order to control the disease, which was prevalent at the time, OGATA dedicated his life to the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. Inheriting this spirit from Koan, today we educate new medical professionals and promote advances in basic medicine to support the medicine of the future, based on the keywords of Innovation, Translation, and Globalization. For these purposes, we have developed three initiatives as comprehensive, cross-functional organizations extending from the Faculty of Medicine to the University Hospital as well as other affiliated sections and other institutions. These are the Global Health Initiative, intended to promote international exchange, the Industry-Academy Cross-Innovation Initiative to promote industry-academy alliances, and the Bio-informatics Initiative aiming to develop clinical applications of big data in human genome analysis research. We also are carrying out educational reforms in Faculty of Medicine education as well as our master s and doctoral degree programs, intended to teach Professionalism and Globalism. In research, we are advancing new developments in cooperation with the University Hospital to link advanced medical knowledge discovered and developed at Osaka University to new innovations, and in the future as well we plan to put to use the considerable results that we have achieved as one of Japan s leading institutions to promote advanced medicine through translational research. To expand into the world and play an active role in the local community over the coming 50 to 100 years, while also respecting the efforts of our predecessors and traditional culture, we will strive for the further progress of the Graduate School of Medicine/Faculty of Medicine, Osaka University as a Challenging, Sustainable, and Tough institution with a free and broad-minded culture focused on practical applications and the forward-looking ability to envision the future.
