P-95 Does the seastar Protoreaster nodosum use a pendular gait while walking underwater? Olaf Ellers 1, Amy Johnson 1, Katie Guttenplan 1, 2, Tatsuo Motokawa 2 1 Biology Department, Bowdoin College, Brunswick Maine, 2 School of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Tokyo Institute of Technology When the starfish Protoreaster nodosum walks, the arc of its center of mass resembles that of terrestrial walkers who use an inverted pendulum mechanism to save energy. Stored potential energy (PE) moves it forward. But since its kinetic energy is much less then its PE, the walk cannot save energy. - -
