148 3 2 50 50 2 3 1830 1913 9 1 9 10 SUMMARY Chiba University Medical School was initially founded as Kyoritsu Hospital in Meiji 7 th 1874 and was followed by the establishment of Chiba Public Hospital. Kyoritsu Hospital was founded as a part of the medical politics in Chiba, while the European style hospital of Sakura feudal clan had been founded in Keioh 3 rd 1867 to mainly examine the lower class retainers and the poor. Kyoritsu Hospital was the forerunner as the European-style hospital in Chiba for treating common people. While the medical school for European medicine was established as an annex to the Chiba Public Hospital for training new medical doctors, until then practitioners of Kanpoh medicine were educated European medicine at medical training centers founded in each place of Chiba. The doctors of Kyoritsu Hospital and Chiba Public Hospital thus not only examined patients, but also provided medical education to students, preventive medical services, such as vaccinations, medical inspection of syphilis and various other duties in Chiba district. The graduates were employed in the Chiba Public Hospital or set up in the district of Chiba. At first these doctors peared the modern times medical treatment in Chiba district. A substantial number of doctors as rare intellectuals, played leading roles in Chiba local politics.
