Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (TMSO) Since the establishment by Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1965 as a part of a cultural promotion project to mark the Tokyo Olympic Games, TMSO has grown to become one of Japan's foremost professional orchestras under the Music Directors such as T.Mori, A.Watanabe, H.Wakasugi, and G.Bertini. In 2015, TMSO s 50th anniversary year, Kazushi Ono will assume the position of the 5th Music Director. Currently Kazuhiro Koizumi serves as Honorary Conductor for Life, Eliahu Inbal as Conductor Laureate and Jakub Hruša as Principal Guest Conductor. In addition to a variety of subscription concerts and special concerts, TMSO is also actively engaged in efforts to support Tokyo residents, such as giving school concerts (about 60 annually), joint concerts with teenagers, concerts for physically challenged persons, and visiting institutions and islands as well as being involved in outreach activities. TMSO has received much international acclaim as the Music Ambassador of Capital Tokyo through overseas performances including Europe, North America and Asia. In November 2015, a tour in Europe is scheduled under the direction of Kazushi Ono. Awards: the Kyoto Music Award (1991), the Japan s 50th Record Academy Award for Best Symphony Album and the 25th Music Pen Club Awards in both categories of Best Concert Performance and Best Recording Product (E.Inbal/ Shostakovich: Symphony No.4, 2012). He studied under Messiaen, Ferrara and Born in the Czech Republic in 1981. He studied conducting at National de Lyon in 2008. Opera appearances at Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Opera de Paris, Deutsche Oper Universität der Künste Berlin. 1st prize winner of Minon Competition in 1970 and of Karajan International Conducting Celibidache. 1st prize winner of the International Guido Cantelli Conducting Competition. Made appearances with world s leading Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under J.Bělohlavek. After graduation, he has built a strong reputation conducting major Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Competition in 1973. Appeared with Berliner Philharmoniker, orchestras. Chief positions were held, among others, at Czech orchestras appearing regularly at Prague National Theatre. He has guest conducted Wiener Philharmoniker, Münchener Philharmoniker, Chicago, Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt (present hr-sinfonieorchester), He has made debuts with many of the leading orchestras including London Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Boston, Cincinnati, Toronto, and Montreal Symphonies among Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Teatro la Fenice di Venezia and Czech Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig others. Collaborated with Rubinstein and Rostropovich. Served as Philharmonic. Recipient of numerous honors including Officier des des SWR, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, NDR and L'Orchestra dell'accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He is Music Director of New Japan Philharmonic and Winnipeg Arts et des Lettres by the French government and Goldenes Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, City of Birmingham Symphony currently Principal Guest Conductor of Filarmonica Arturo Symphony. Also held numerous other positions of Japanese Ehrenzeichen of the city of Vienna. Also serves as Music Director of Kyushu Symphony, Laureate in April 2014. Numerous live CDs with the TMSO met with (Washington) and Cleveland Orchestra. He is Music Director and be inaugurated as Music Director of TMSO in April 2015 and Principal Guest Conductor of Sendai Philharmonic and Guest high acclaim. Chief Conductor of Prague Philharmonia. Education & Outreach Education Programs Activities to educate and enrich Lives. School Concerts Since TMSO was founded, it has provided opportunities for students to appreciate the power and beauty of orchestra music through its live performance. Joint Concert Selected Teenage / Student applicants get the opportunity to participate in clinics given by TMSO musicians and to appear on stage with the TMSO. TMSO Maestro Visit TMSO conductor and musicians visit schools in Tokyo and give special class for students where they talk about the pleasure of music and their life in pursuit of the art. Introduction to Musical Instruments Current and retired TMSO musicians visit elementary schools located in Taito-ku and Toshima-ku introducing students to the art of playing instruments. Concerts for Community As Music Ambassador of Capital Tokyo We are committed to bringing the pleasure of music to the widest possible audience. FUREAI Concert / Outreach for physically challenged persons TMSO has continuously provided FUREAI Concert for over 30 years, which enables physically challenged persons to attend and enjoy a live orchestra performance at a concert hall. Thanks to the support from various companies and corporations, TMSO musicians visit welfare facilities and hospitals and give concerts. Open Rehearsals People can attend open rehearsals and witness music-making on site. Community Chamber Concerts Performances Overseas TMSO has received much international acclaim as the Music Ambassador of Capital Tokyo through overseas tours including Europe, Russia, North America and Asia. Tokyo Metrpolitan Symphony Orchestra was invited to perform at Music Festivals held in three cities of Czech Republic and Slovakia. International Contributions Besides touring overseas, TMSO is engaged in international activities such as musician exchange programs with Singapore Symphony Orchestra. TMSO provides not only admission free Tea Time Concert in the foyer of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, but also performs in numerous events and ceremonies in accordance with various needs. Performance in Tama District and Islands Performances in the Provinces TMSO provides high quality music across the country. Contributions to the post-disaster Restoration TMSO gives concerts in remote locations such as Islands of Tokyo, so that the residents can appreciate classical music in their hometown. Premium Concert TMSO visits halls, schools and facilities in the region hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in an effort to support the people. TMSO gives admission-free concerts of orchestra / smaller groups of ensembles in various places in Tokyo to provide opportunities for the public to feel closer to classical music.
