What s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word man or woman? What differences can you think of between countries in the East and countries in the West? What is your first impression when you meet a politician? We all have preconceived ideas about people and things. Gender, nationality, race, and social classes are the most common subjects of stereotypes. Some people view men as stronger than women. We sometimes overgeneralize one characteristic to all people in one nation or race. We sometimes think that Westerners value directness while Easterners value politeness. Some say that Asians are better at Math than other races. Other people think that wealth has something to do with education, and poverty with ignorance. The moment we hear, see, or think of someone or something, we instantly create expectations in our minds. We sometimes view things based on popular and general beliefs. In one way or another, we all have certain stereotypes about things. B. Quick Q&A (2-3 minutes) 1. What is your impression of Western people in general? 2. What s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase Asian food? 3. Are there specific colors that you associate with males or females? Why? 4. Exercise 2: Say It! (3 minutes) Read each word and sample sentence below.
