Advanced Conversation Material #12 Stereotypes Exercise 1: Read Aloud A. Read the article below. (3-4 minutes) 次の文章を読んでください ( 所要時間目安 :3~4 分 ) They say Japanese people are generally polite. Is that true? Well, I can t speak for everyone in Japan. I think it s just a stereotype. P a g e 1

What s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word man or woman? What differences can you think of between countries in the East and countries in the West? What is your first impression when you meet a politician? We all have preconceived ideas about people and things. Gender, nationality, race, and social classes are the most common subjects of stereotypes. Some people view men as stronger than women. We sometimes overgeneralize one characteristic to all people in one nation or race. We sometimes think that Westerners value directness while Easterners value politeness. Some say that Asians are better at Math than other races. Other people think that wealth has something to do with education, and poverty with ignorance. The moment we hear, see, or think of someone or something, we instantly create expectations in our minds. We sometimes view things based on popular and general beliefs. In one way or another, we all have certain stereotypes about things. B. Quick Q&A (2-3 minutes) 1. What is your impression of Western people in general? 2. What s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase Asian food? 3. Are there specific colors that you associate with males or females? Why? 4. What jobs in your country are usually associated with women? 5. Name at least three stereotypes about your culture. P a g e 2

Exercise 2: Say It! (3 minutes) Read each word and sample sentence below. Next, use the word in your own sentence. 次の単語と例文を読んでから それぞれの単語を使って自分でも文を作ってみましょう open-minded 心の広い label 分類する jump to conclusions 結論を急ぐ discrimination 差別 bias 偏見 Sample Sentence I became more open-minded about foreigners after I worked at an international organization. 国際機関で働くようになって 私は外国人に対してよ り寛容になった Schools should not label students as underachievers. 学校は生徒に劣等生のレッテルを貼ってはならない Let s hear both sides before jumping to conclusions. 結論を急がず双方から話を聞きましょう Our company treats all employees equally to avoid discrimination. 差別をなくすため わが社は全従業員を平等に扱って いる There s obviously a bias against foreign applicants in our office. 外国人応募者に対する明らかな偏見が社内にある Your Own Sentence P a g e 3

Exercise 3: Complete the Dialogue (5 minutes) Complete the dialogue using your own answers. You can use any of the new vocabulary words and expressions, if possible. 好きな言葉を入れて会話を完成させましょう 今日学習した単語や表現を使っても構いません Tutor We have two applicants from different countries applying for a managerial position one from Britain and the other from India. Who do you think should we prioritize? (encourage your tutor not to decide based on the applicants nationalities) Tutor You think so? But I think it would be easier if we took their nationalities into consideration. (disagree with your tutor and advise him/her how they can decide objectively) Tutor Why should we do that? (answer your tutor s question) Tutor I understand now. Thank you for telling me that. (tell your tutor how to avoid discrimination next time) P a g e 4

Exercise 4: Defend Yourself! (5 minutes) Pick your stand on each of the following items. Explain your choice. Your tutor will be asking follow-up questions. Make sure you can convince him/her! 次のテーマについて あなたの意見に合う考えを選択肢から選び その理由を説明してください それについて講師が質問するので 納得させられるように答えてください OPTION A OPTION B Gender stereotypes at work It s more practical for a company to hire men for highly physical and technical jobs. Women can perform highly physical and technical jobs as well as men can. Racial Stereotype There is less racial stereotyping today because of globalization. Globalization has strengthened racial stereotyping. Stereotype about social class Social status can be an indicator of a person s competency and attitude at work. Social status has little bearing on a person s overall performance at work. P a g e 5

Exercise 5: Conversation Starter (5 minutes) Pick one of the four scenarios below, and start a conversation with your tutor. 次の 4 つのシナリオから好きなものを選んで講師と会話を始めましょう Tell your tutor how gender stereotypes can negatively affect one s work. Identify the possible root of this stereotype. Give one seemingly negative stereotype about your country that you think is true. Defend your choice. P a g e 6
