Amidst such an environment School of Human Sciences, Waseda University established the first ever distance-learning courses in Japan, (e-school), enabling students to acquire their bachelor degrees through lectures conducted solely over the Internet in April The characteristics of these courses is the varied curriculum, incorporating approximately 300 subjects, a class system that limits student numbers to 30 students per class in accordance with the number of students wishing to enroll and individual instruction from tutors that have acquired their masters degree. The transmitted lesson images are of a quality that allow students to easily read what is written on the blackboard ( pixels, 15 frames/sec, bandwidth: 384Kbps.) This report outlines the purpose for establishing e-school, the curriculum, how it works, the system and other elements of e-school set up by School of Human Sciences, Waseda University and the results of a questionnaire conducted on students after a period of one year. The results of the questionnaire tell of a promising beginning for e-school.
