13 e-learning e e JSET04-3 pp CAI 11 3 pp e-learning e 20 pp pp NOJIMA, Eiichiro and Shoji NISHIMURA (1996.3), A Practical Study and Its Evaluation of International Computer Communications Using Two Languages, Educational Technolpgy Research Vol. 18, pp pp IT Implementation of distance-learning courses for university by e-learning Activities undertaken by e-school, an initiative of the correspondence course of School of Human Sciences, Waseda University Shoji Nishimura It is now possible for the transmission of images of lessons with a visual quality close to that of television not only throughout Japan but also throughout the world at affordable rates due to the explosive deployment of ADSL. Amidst such an environment School of Human Sciences, Waseda University established the first ever distance-learning courses in Japan, (e-school), enabling students to acquire their bachelor degrees through lectures conducted solely over the Internet in April The characteristics of these courses is the varied curriculum, incorporating approximately 300 subjects, a class system that limits student numbers to 30 students per class in accordance with the number of students wishing to enroll and individual instruction from tutors that have acquired their masters degree. The transmitted lesson images are of a quality that allow students to easily read what is written on the blackboard ( pixels, 15 frames/sec, bandwidth: 384Kbps.) This report outlines the purpose for establishing e-school, the curriculum, how it works, the system and other elements of e-school set up by School of Human Sciences, Waseda University and the results of a questionnaire conducted on students after a period of one year. The results of the questionnaire tell of a promising beginning for e-school.
