Study on the Effects of Infant Care Stressors and Social Support in New Mother s Psychological Stress Hitomi Nishiumi Nobuko Matsuda ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of infant care stressors and social support on the postpartum psychological stress reaction of new mothers. We interviewed 99 new mothers three times about their recognition of infant care stressors and social support from their husbands and mothers. The first time was one week, the second two to three weeks, and the third five to seven weeks after childbirth. The following results were obtained. 1. Infant care stressors could be divided into three categories : infant body stressor, crying infant stressor and lifestyle stressor. 2. The level of psychological stress reaction was highest during the first two to three weeks postpartum (F= 3.22,p<0.05). 3. The stronger the crying child stressor (bs=0.32, p<0.01) and lifestyle stressor (bs=0.20, p<0.05) were rated, the more severe the psychological stress reaction was during the first two to three weeks. The same relationship was observed between lifestyle stressor psychological stress reaction five to seven weeks postpartum (bs=0.41, p<0.001). The recognition of social support from their husbands and mothers had no effect on reaction to psychological stress. Clarification through this investigation of the factors causing new mothers stress should be helpful for the development of a more specific support system in the near future.
