Kazakh Traditional Handcraft Techniques The case of Baynolgii, Mongolia Chieko Hirota Keywords: Kazakh, Mongolia, BaynOlgii, Handcrafts, Stitch, Weaving Summery: This is a report about the Kazakh traditional handcraft techniques which are seen in Baynolgii, Mongolia. Kazakh nomads live in yurts, called "kiz ui" in Kazakh. Their yurts are filled with ornamentation, such as wall hangings, weaving panels, rugs etc. These handcrafts are made with Kazakh traditional ethnic patterns, which are mainly composed of curved shapes like the shape of sheep horns or birds. It is said that this type of ornamentation has been made by the hands of Kazakh women dating far back into history. Handcraft is called "hol uner" in Kazakh. Generally speaking, Kazakh traditional handcrafts are composed of 3 different techniques: "stitching (tigu)," "weaving (teru)," and "wrapping (orau)." Kazakh women make wall hangings and rugs by stitching, weaving strings by weaving, and straw wall panels for preventing sand from getting into the yurtby wrapping. Kazakh traditional handcraft techniques have many common features. Firstly, each technique can be created through easy repetitive movements, which do not require complicated actions. So you can learn all traditional techniques by practicing and repeating the same movements. Secondly, each technique can express curves and straight lines freely. That is to say, each technique can express the Kazakh traditional patterns easily which are composed by curves and straight lines. Thirdly, all techniques don't need to use many tools. Additionally, as all tools to make ornaments are made by wood or iron, if you lack a specific tool, other objects used in daily life are easily substituted instead. These are all features of Kazakh traditional handcrafts techniques that have made the Kazakh women's handcraft work possible and allowed women to adorn their yurts with beautiful ornamentation even within the limited conditions of nomadic life.
