Research was done to find out which things most attract the attention of hikers in the mountains. Twenty hikers were each given a camera and a small cassette tape player, which was to be kept on during the hike. Whenever they heard a voice on the tape say Take a picture now!, they had to take a picture of whatever they were looking at. Then, using the scale 1 (not at all) to 7 (very or very much), they had to respond to the following questions: (a) How beautiful do you feel the view is? and (b) How satisfied are you with the view? The instruction to take a picture was repeated several times during the hike. The researchers later divided the photographs into five groups according to the main object in the picture. They then judged the distance of that object from the hiker and divided the photos accordingly. The results, together with the averages of the hikers responses to questions (a) and (b), are shown in the table below. But Ground was felt to be the least beautiful of the five groups of objects. Mountains and valleys gave the greatest satisfaction to the hikers. Interestingly, it was also found that male hikers were more likely to be viewing objects classed as Ground or Mountains and Valleys. On the other hand, female hikers were more likely to be looking at Other Objects, such as signs, the sky, and people around them. Another finding was that there was a connection between hikers previous visits to this area and the distance of the object viewed. Hikers visiting the area for the first time tended to be viewing objects which were far away from them, while those who had visited the area before tended to look at objects which were closer.

Recycling one ton of newspaper, for example, saves seventeen trees and more than 26,000 liters of water. In addition, recycling often helps to save energy and reduce pollution. Various attempts are being made to encourage people to collect as much recyclable paper as possible. We know that people will gather recyclable paper more enthusiastically if they get money for doing it. To find more economical and effective ways to encourage people to recycle paper, an experiment was carried out by a group of researchers. They selected eighty families who were willing to take part in the experiment, and these were divided into four groups of twenty families. The experiment was conducted in two stages of six weeks each. In Stage I, the families were simply told to collect paper for recycling. The amount collected by each family was measured. In Stage II, the families continued to collect paper, but three of the groups were given some kind of encouragement. The families in Group A had their names mentioned in a local newspaper. Those in Group B received weekly records of the weight of the recyclable paper they had collected. Both kinds of encouragement were given to the families in Group C. Group D, however, received no encouragement at all. The graph shows the average weekly quantities collected by each group during Stages I and II. Group A collected a little less than Group D in Stage I, but slightly more than Group D in Stage II. Group B had an average well above the other three groups in Stage I, and also collected more paper than any other group in Stage II. Group C showed the most remarkable improvement between Stages I and II.
