A lot of stray animals were held there. She was looking for a dog to train as a therapy dog. She was interested in animal therapy. She believed that dogs could help soothe sick people. Sandy found a female puppy with curly black fur among the dogs in the shelter. The puppy sniffed as she gazed into Sandy s eyes. Sandy said to herself, This is fate, and chose that puppy. Sandy held the puppy tight. She named her Olivia. One day, Sandy was reading her favorite picture book in bed. She showed the book to Olivia, who was lying next to her. Suddenly, Sandy hit on an idea reading a book to a dog. Many children don t like reading books nowadays, but what if they read to dogs? she thought. Then, they will see how interesting reading is. Sandy tried reading some books to the sleeping dog. She felt as if Olivia were listening to her. She became certain that her idea would work. The next day, Sandy called a friend who worked in the city library. She told the friend that a reading program with dogs might attract children to the library. The friend thought it was a great idea, and Sandy started the program there. She called it the R.E.A.D. program. R.E.A.D. stands for Reading Education Assistance Dogs. Olivia became one of the first dogs 196 高 校 講 座 学 習 メモ

Reading 2 1 Olivia for the program. Sandy took Olivia to the library every Saturday, and many children looked forward to taking part in the program. What they had to do was to read a book to a dog. Some children didn t like reading books aloud in front of others because they couldn t read well, and people laughed at their mistakes. But Olivia never made fun of the children. She just listened quietly. Reading to Olivia, the children felt at ease and gained confidence. Little by little, they came to enjoy reading aloud. With shining eyes, they chose as interesting books as possible for Olivia. 197 高 校 講 座 学 習 メモ

His name was Sean, and he was a troublemaker. He always misbehaved and fought with his classmates. When Sandy introduced him to the R.E.A.D. program, he ran around the school library. He pulled books off the shelves and threw them on the floor. One day, however, Sean showed a little change. He told Sandy that he didn t like dogs. His family had a dog, but it would often bite. He asked Sandy if Olivia would bite. Sandy said to Sean, Olivia won t bite. She wants to be your friend. She made him sit next to Olivia, and said, Sean, this is Olivia. Sean put his arms around the dog. He said in a small voice, Olivia, you re nice and warm. At that moment, the two became friends. Sean came to the school library every week to read to Olivia. He never misbehaved because he knew that Olivia didn t like bad behavior. He was always gentle and friendly with her. One summer day, Olivia looked very tired. It was hot, so Sean fanned her with a book. But Olivia was unwell all day, and Sandy took her to the veterinarian. Sandy and Olivia stopped coming to the school library, and Sean was very worried. Three weeks later, Sandy took Olivia to the school library. She told Sean that Olivia was seriously ill and wouldn t be able to live much longer. On hearing that, Sean got up, brought a book over, and started to read it to Olivia. Tears were trickling down his cheeks. Olivia quietly listened, just 201 高 校 講 座 学 習 メモ

as usual. A month later, Olivia passed away. She was only three years old. Sean wrote her a letter. Dear Olivia, Now I can read books well. That s because you were with me, Olivia. You never laughed at me even when I made mistakes. I didn t like dogs at first, but that changed after I met you. Your coat was soft and fluffy and you were very kind. You listened when I read stories to you. I was very happy to be with you, Olivia. I noticed I liked you very much. I know you were my best friend, and I wanted to cherish you. Thank you very much. I will never forget you. I will remember you forever, Olivia. Sean 202 高 校 講 座 学 習 メモ
