No.56 A word from another world Mother s Day Catrina Caira A wonderful celebration happens on the second Sunday of May each year in Canada. It is a celebration of mothers and mother figures (step-mothers, Mother-in-laws, guardians, even family friends who have been like mothers to us). It is the busiest day of the year for many restaurants, as taking you mother out for a meal is a popular way to celebrate. Cards, flowers, chocolates, gift certificates, and handmade items are also very popular. Though this holiday started in America it is very popular in Canada. For Mother s Day this year I thought I would honor my mother, Darlene, by writing a little about her. My mother is an American who married a Canadian and moved to Canada. She studied to be a primary school teacher and got a master s degree in special education (teaching people with disabilities). She started work as a teacher in America but then came to Canada to teach when my sister and I were very young. She has been teaching Kindergarten (4-6 year olds, which is when elementary school starts in Canada) for over 10 years now. She loves children and has always been a great role modelfor me. She has taught me so much and is the reason I became interested in teaching which lead me to be interested in teaching here. I m very glad she inspired me to teach and come to this wonderful town. 16
