No.52 A word from another world The Voyage of Discovery. Hal Stutz "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."-marcel Proust What does it mean to have new eyes? Many foreigners come to Japan with high expectations, but they don t really know what they are looking for. I think this is true for many young people who decide to move to a different country. But what of the people who have already lived and experienced and, in some cases, found? Their journey is far from over! Having new eyes means trying to understand the experiences of others. It means challenging your own perceptions of proper and improper, of right and wrong. It means questioning what you have always been taught and told, and what you have taught and told others. It means removing the lens of one s own bias and admitting, I know nothing. The journey only ends when you close your mind to learning. Learn something new every day; touch someone else s consciousness; admit how little you know. It expands your horizons to an edge of the earth you've yet to see. 18
