The characteristics of each gasket material are briefly described in the following paragraphs to help you select the gasket material optimum for your application. NR (black) Nitryl rubber NR gaskets are used widely for flood processing in general. However, they should not be used in a pipeline that feeds high-concentration acetic acid or an ester compound or in any environment where it can be exposed to steam. The fluid temperature should preferably be not higher than 80 C. NR gaskets are execllent in oil resistance and thus suitable for pipelines that feed animal/vegetable oil. Silicone rubber (white) Silicone rubber is exellent in heat resistance but poor in steam resistance. Generaly since silicone rubber gaskets are poor in mechanical strength, they require particular attention when used in conjunction with JIS flanges. Silicone rubber gaskets exhibit relatively high resistance to weak acid and alkali solutions.
EPDM (black) ethylene propylene rubber EPDM gaskets are exellent in heat resistance and exhibit high resistance to water, hot water, acid and alkali solutions, but remarkably poor in oil resistance. Therefore, they should not be used in a pipeline that feeds food containing oil/fat. The fluid temperature should preferably be not higher than 10 C. FKM (black) fluoro-rubber FKM exhibits high resistance to heat, oil, and chemicals, but is poor in resistance to steam and acetic acid. The fluid temperature should preferably be not higher than 140 C. Kalrez (black) perfluoroelastomer Kalrez is a unique elastomer with a chemical resistance equal to Teflon. with higher heat resistance than that of conventional silicone and fluororubber and with elasticity equal to that of rubber.(there is only ferrule type gasket.) Note that, as the adoption criteria for each of these gasket materials, Osaka Sanitary uses materials tests and elution tests specified in Food and dditives Standards (Notice No.370 of 1959 issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan), rticle 3-D-"Instruments, Containers and Packages Made of Synthetic Resin" and 3-D-3(1) For ordering

Sanitary Pipe Size Selection and Optimum Flow Rate The pipe size optimum for a process pipeline is dependent on the relationship between the following factors : Pump capacity Pipe pressure loss In sanitary piping, the cleanability of the pipeline serves as another important factor. The following are typical requirements for implementing sufficient cleanability : The flow velocity must be 0.6m/sec or higher (to prevent retention of air in the upper portion of the pipe interior). The flow rate must be such that turbulent flow is formed. Table 1 shows recommended flow rate ranges and other data useful for size selection. Note 1. When selecting the optimum pipe size by flow velocity (flow rate), make sure that the CIP pump capacity is large enough to compensate for the total pressure loss in the process pipeline subject to CIP. Note. s a rough guideline, it is preferable to select a pipe size whose pressure loss is approximately 7.84510 Pa for small-diameter pipes or not larger than 7.84510 Pa for medium- to large-size-pipes.

Piping Gradient pipeline laid horizontally should preferably have a slight gradient so that fluid can be discharged by gravity. Generally, a practicable gradient should be selected from the range of 1/75 to 1/150. Piping Support Pitch Piping supports are used to prevent pipe deflection and excessive tension of fittings to protect apparatus. lthough the optimum support pitch is dependent on the layout, refer to the following table for the support pitch for straight pipelines. l l Thermal Expansion/Shrinkage of Pipe Thermal expansion/shrinkage of a pipe is given by the following formula. l l l l lpipe expansion/shrinkage (mm) Pipe material's linear expansion coefficient (1/) SUS304, SUS316 variation in temperature (, deg) l Initial length of pipe (mm)
Recommended Piping Pitch This standard applies to the pitch between parallel pipelines that are each joined by use of Screwed union fittings, Ferrule union fittings, Sanitary flange union fittings, and JIS 10K flange union fittings unit:mm This standard applies to the pitch between parallel pipelines that are welding without any fittings unit:mm Remarks 1For large pipe sizes that are not listed in the table, determine the piping pitch using the following formula. Piping pitch = (arger-size pipe's flange OD + smaller-size pipe OD) + 5 (mm) For heat insulated pipeline, add the insulator thickness to the dimension specified in the table. 3Do not apply this standard where the fittings of the adjacent pipelines are aligned with each other.
The table to the right shows data for calculation of yield pressure of the welded ferrule or ferrule gasket which is normally assembled by various size of clamps. Use these data only as the reference data because conditions such as the weight of equipment and piping stress applied to the clamped union are not considered. 00 150 100 50 4 s 1 s, 1.5 s 3 s, s 1.5 s.5 s 0 0 0.5 1.0 1.5.0 (MPa) 00 00 4 s 3.5 s 6.5 s s 5.5 s 150 100 50 1 s, 1.5 s, 3 s 1.5 s,.5 s, 4.5 s 0 0 0.5 1.0 1.5.0 (MPa) 00 150 100 50 4 s 3.5 s 00 3 s, 6.5 s 4.5 s s 1 s, 1.5 s 1.5 s,.5 s 5.5 s 0 0 0.5 1.0 1.5.0 (MPa)
