Quid Ultra Facim? Anaïs de Pablo from the Autonomous University of Madrid It is up to you. Ciaran Dudley from the University of British Columbia To the prospective exchange student, Let me start by saying that you have made a wonderful choice to consider participating in this life-changing study abroad program! Post-secondary exchange programs provide an excellent opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, broaden your academic horizons, interact with new people in a new environment and break down the falsely-projected boundaries between cultures. I would like to tell you a little about my university. Established in 1906, the University of British Columbia (UBC) maintains an outstanding international reputation and was ranked the 2nd best university in Canada and 35th in the world by the Academic Rankings of World Universities in 2008. UBC's enrolment numbers are some of the largest in North America, with an average student population of 41,000 and an alumnus of 180,000 from over 120 countries. UBC offers an exceptionally high quality of education and is proud to hold the highest percentage of Ph.D level professors out of all public universities in North America (92%). It has also received widespread recognition for its foreign language programs in particular and currently has the largest Chinese studies program in North America and the second-largest Japanese language program surpassed only by the University of Hawaii. Complete with world-class research centres, internationally-renowned Art and Science professors and a variety of student organizations and club activities, there is certainly a place for you at UBC. The campus itself is located in the beautiful beachside hills of Point Grey, which is conveniently reachable by car or public transit in about 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver. The design of the campus grounds is ultra-modern with spacious glass-based architecture creating an open and bright environment with a high level of energy. Vancouver itself is a marvellously progressive and multi-cultural city with a population that is remarkably rich and diverse. Host of the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games, Vancouver is considered to be one of the most liveable cities in the world. So what are you waiting for? Take the opportunity to enrich your academic career, take the time to discover new possibilities, take the chance to find out who you really are. It's up to you. Quid Ultra Facim? It is the motto of Autonomous University. The meaning is What else can we do? Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (The Autonomous University of Madrid) is commonly known by its Spanish initials UAM, or as "la Autónoma", and is a Spanish Public University established in 1968. Throughout its history, UAM has been one of Spain's most prominent Higher Education Institutions, ranked first amongst Spanish Universities. UAM's Cantoblanco Campus holds most of the university's facilities and is located 15 km north of Madrid, accessible by train or bus. You can be in downtown Madrid in only twenty minutes by taking the Cercanías train to Sol Station, which is considered the center of Spain, Km 0, because it is there where all the main Spanish roads start. The Km 0 is one of the most traditional meeting points in Madrid, along with the statue El oso y el madroño located in the same station. The original faculties were housed in interconnected buildings with several patios in between them. Characteristic of each building is a large number of stairways in its corridors. This design can be a little complicated in the beginning, but after you get used to it, it can be very fun to discover many new routes and different shortcuts, which may be very helpful if you are running late for class. Sporting facilities include two swimming pools (an indoor one and an outdoor one), two multiple use pavilions, and outdoor tennis, football, basketball, paddle tennis, rugby, futsal and beach volleyball courts. So if you are a sports person, this is your place to be, but if you are not, there are other services on campus including 16 cafeterias and other eating facilities, medical services, a pharmacy with optic care, a foreign languages pavilion and a bookstore. Lastly, studying abroad is not only about the actual study, it is also about the experience of living in another country with people from all around the world, learning together about the country's culture, language, food, music, traditional festivals, etc. Madrid is one of the best cities to experience all of that because its location allows you the ability to travel around Spain easily and see first hand all that Spain can offer to you. Here is one tip if you decide to come and study at UAM, do not miss the opportunity to travel around Spain. Since Spain is a country with so much history and influence from cultures as different as the Vikings and the Arabians, you will see that Northern Spain differs greatly with the South. Architecture, food, music and customs are very different depending on where in Spain you are, making understanding the Spanish culture a lot of fun. What else can we do? We will be looking forward to seeing you next semester at The Autonomous University of Madrid. 25 26
