Discover your vocation: A reflection on five years of employment support activities Hiroshi Kawasaki After working for 32 years at Shiga Bank and eight years at a local medium-size company, in spring 2006, I returned to the Faculty of Economics at Shiga University, from which I graduated 40 years earlier, as a full-time employment support instructor. Shiga University established the position of full-time employment support instructor a position not offered by many Japanese national universities at the Faculty of Economics in April 2001. As the second associate professor to take on this role, I performed my duties for five years, until the end of March 2011. The university had changed quite a bit. Apart from new buildings, the number of students increased fourfold, of which a third were female (there was not a single woman in my time), and the Faculty of Economics had become one of the largest of any national university. The campus had acquired a sparkle that students 50 years ago would envy. My duties consisted mainly of career counseling. I gave advice to between 350 and 400 students and received visits from 250 companies each year. This paper is based on my fiveyear experience in employment support activities. I describe how finding work has changed during this time and explain in detail how you, as students, can discover your vocation what preparations you should make at each stage between your first and fourth years, what kind of campus life you should lead, and how to go about actual job-hunting activities. I took up my pen not only for future graduates but also for teachers, whom I hope will lend a hand in guiding students to employment.
