History of Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College as Remembered by Graduates Takayo KANO Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College expresses in its mission statement that it aims at educating women who will live in the spirit of charity and service, and, being aware of social need, who will work in any quarter willing to contribute to her neighbors; and accordingly Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College provides the educational programs focused on liberal arts subjects to give students deeper human understanding and wider global views. Since its foundation in 1950, Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College has produced over 50 thousand graduates, who were highly recognized in society at large. Hoping to find the reason for this success the author conducted the numerous interviews with past presidents and former students who were enrolled in the years from 1950 to 1988. Among the former students are included those who have joined Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College as staff members after their graduation. Among the former students also are included those who have actively participated in the Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College Alumnae Association. This paper concludes that such high reputation was due to the following two facts: firstly, the principle of Aoyama Gakuin Women s Junior College with its Christian background emphasizing the liberal arts education modified to meet the needs of the times, and secondly, the enthusiasm of the students who appreciated the program and enjoyed their college life to the full, learning and educating themselves. 86
