An Inside History of Recreational Cycling in Japan: Shinichi Toriyama s Thoughts on Cycling and Their Background Tsuguyoshi UENO Abstract Shinichi Toriyama is one of the most compelling figures to have emerged from the cycling history in Japan. He has disseminated information on European recreational cycling in many ways: training recreation advisors through the Japan Cycling Association (JCA), writing a lot of guidebooks, contributing articles to cycling magazines and academic journals, and advising small and medium-sized workshops and mass-production makers as a consultant on the French-style touring bicycles. In this paper, I excavate Toriyama's biography and place it in a borader social and historical setting to explore what might have led him to criticize the Japanese style of mass ride originated in war-time cycling events, and to understand why he had promoted recreational cycling for adults.
