32 2008 pp. 193 210 1 Received October 31, 2008 The Japanese auxiliary verbs in benefactive construction can be classified in terms of the following two semantic functions: ones that only represent the surface meaning of To whom is the favor given, and the others whose derivative function is projected from the basis of the former. However, these days the benefactive construction is considered merely as an expression of give and receive in the Japanese pedagogical arena in China. In this paper, by highlighting the -teyaru structure and confirming the existence of derivative function from multiple perspectives, I attempt to propose a prototype-based pedagogical methodology for future Japanese language teaching. 193
