The United States desires that this government should conform as closely as may be to principles of democratic self-government but it is not the responsibility of the Allied Powers to impose upon Japan any form of government not supported by the freely expressed will of the people. Comparative Research on Newspaper Series of the History of the Pacific War in December 1945 The Role of Serialized Story in Early Occupational Period First Part Aiko Mitsui The newspaper serial the Pacific War which was ordered to be printed by General Head Quarters from December 8, 1945 to December 17, in all the major newspaper throughout Japan. This document prepared by the GHQ was such a well known story for postwar Japan that the whole story was also published as a booklet and provided as a school history textbook in 1946. On the other hand, it is not very well known that all the major newspapers edited differently over the provided text. The purpose of this research is to clarify the role of this series seen as a first action on the part of GHQ for reconstructing Japanese social views of the war using directly controlled mass media. By comparing variation of the text published in three major newspapers such as Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri, with each other and also with the booklet text, this research is trying to add another view of this series : it also performed a remarkable task as political and social public relations tools to create a new image of the relationship with the United States.
