1 On the Revival of Old-fashioned Local Japanese Theaters, Shibaigoya Introduction to Sociological Studies ASHIDA Tetsuro Abstract : Over the last few decades, there have been revivals of some old-fashioned local theaters or playhouses, Shibaigoya, which were built in Japan before Word war, suchas Koraku-kan in Akita Prefecture, Hirose-za in Fukushima Prefecture, Nagame-yokyojo in Gunma Prefecture, Eiraku-kan in Hyogo Prefecture, Wakimachi-gekijo in Tokushima Prefecture, Kanamaru-za in Kagawa Prefecture, Uchikoza in Ehime Prefecture, Kaho-gekijo in Fukuoka Prefecture and Yachiyo-za in Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of those theaters once closed their doors for good and were brought to the verge of destruction or collapse, but somehow survived and subsequently revived. Nowadays many of them are expected to be centers of revitalization of local communities. I have been investigating the actual situations of a good number of these kinds of theaters, and I have been searching how and why they have revived and how they have been made use of. I have also been considering the effects of the revivals on local communities. In this paper, I will sketch out some aspects of the revival of such theaters.
