NGUYEN XUAN BAC I was fortunately accepted as a PhD student at the International Graduate School of Social Sciences (IGSSS) where I had a good opportunity to enhance my knowledge and research skills in an internationally recognized academic environment. Like many other PhD candidates at IGSSS, I sometimes faced numerous research challenges and had to stay up late at night to seek a solution. In such occasions, I often had discussions with my academic advisor, Professor Craig Parsons and always obtained very helpful advice. By motivating my logical thinking, he inspired my enjoyment in doing research and I eventually completed my doctoral dissertation within the timeframe I strived for. While my study was rather busy, I still had many chances to participate in various extra-curricular activities which left me unforgettable memories. Through these activities, I learned more about the Japanese people and culture. Before coming to Japan, I was mainly impressed by the Japanese post-war economic miracle, but now I realize that Japanese cultural values are equally impressive and perhaps significantly contributed to the economic miracle.
