18 Abstract The problem of privacy in the news of newspapers and weekly magazines The An analysis of the articles on the serial child-murder case in Kobe Akihiko SHIMAZAKI Kenzo SHIDA Toshihiko KATANO The serial child-murder case that took place in Suma Ward, Kobe City in May, 1997 had a big impact on society at large firstly because the criminal was a junior high school student, and also because of the abnormality of the cruel modus operandi, where the criminal sent out a crime statement to a newspaper company. Wide and various analyses concerning this incident were made in such fields as education, psychology, law and psychiatry, etc. immediately after the arrest of the criminal. The primary objective of this dissertation is to reveal various problems of journalism in Japan through the analyses from the viewpoint of journalism. The method of analysis is as follows. All articles on the incidents in three national newspapers, namely, Asahi Shimbun," "The Yomiuri Shimbun," "Mainichi Shimbun," and three weekly magazines, or " Weekly Bunshun," "Weekly Shincho," " Weekly Post," were classified by using the technique of the content analysis on plural items multiple items. In particular, the authors paid special attention to the factor of privacy in the news and verified them. One of the findings was that newspapers showed a tendency of self-restraint on human rights abuse but that they didnt function well as journalism. In other words, newspapers were insufficient to get closer to the heart of the incidents and their report tended to be superficial. On the other hand, weekly magazines had a tendency to carry more articles with aspects of privacy which dont necessarily pertain to the essence of the incidents. Moreover, they had a general trend toward more detailed report than newspapers. Through this analysis, their peculiar aspects of commercialism and sensationalism, which had been widely pointed out, became clearer. 84
