The Philosophy of Shikon Shosai (A Union of Samurai Spirit and Business Talent) and the Shikon Shosai General Research Center Section 1 Shikon Shosai as a Principle of Modern Japanese Capitalism Masao Tsutsui Section 2 The Shikon Shosai General Research Center and Its Collections Masao Tsutsui Takeshi Fujie Atsuro Shibata Taiki Kamei This year marks the ninetieth anniversary of the foundation of Hikone Higher Commercial School, the precursor to Shiga University Faculty of Economics. In this special year, the university began construction of the three-story Shikon Shosai General Research Center in the courtyard of the Hikone Campus. The center, named after the school motto, is scheduled to be completed next year. In commemoration of the anniversary, we took a close historical look at the philosophy of Shikon Shosai and concluded that it is not a mere school motto, but represents the modern Japanese spirit or the principle of modern Japanese capitalism. In this paper we will introduce the facilities of the Shikon Shosai General Research Center and the collections of the Institute for Economic and Business Research that will be located on the first floor of the new research center. The collections rare and precious items will be provided with commentaries.
